Au début des années 1920, Man Ray, né Emmanuel Radnitzky (1890-1976) se rend à Paris où il est accueilli par le peintre et sculpteur français Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) en tant que représentant du dadaïsme new-yorkais. Au cours des années suivantes, ce groupe international d’avant-garde conçoit et donne naissance au mouvement surréaliste, dont Man Ray devient un membre éminent, tout en continuant à peindre, mais avec une nouvelle énergie et vigueur qu’il consacre à la photographie.
Pour satisfaire ses désirs d’expérimentation, Man Ray s’installe en juillet 1922 dans un atelier d'artiste situé au 31 bis, Rue Campagne Première, au cœur du quartier Montparnasse. À partir de l’automne 1929, il commence à réaliser des portraits solarisés, résultat d’un accident de laboratoire qu’il transforme en une véritable expression artistique. Cette « inversion partielle des valeurs sur une photographie » (Dominique Baqué, Les Documents de la modernité, Paris, Éditions Jacqueline Chambon, 1993, p. 126) lui donne l’opportunité d’inventer son propre style, devenant par là même une figure de proue du surréalisme et de la modernité.
En 1932, Man Ray fait la rencontre de Meret Oppenheim (1913-1985), une jeune artiste suisse d’origine allemande récemment installée à Paris, par l’intermédiaire du sculpteur et peintre suisse Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). Oppenheim, désormais reconnue comme une actrice majeure du groupe – notamment pour son œuvre le Déjeuner en fourrure (1936) – commence à poser pour lui l’année suivante.
Dans ce portrait pris dans son studio au 31 bis, Rue Campagne Première, Man Ray capture le visage de profil de celle qu'il décrit comme l’une des femmes les plus désinhibées qu'il ait rencontrées. Le contraste marqué entre les ombres et les lumières, résultat de la solarisation sur le négatif, accentue les traits d’Oppenheim, qui sont comme texturés et cernés de noir. Ce procédé donne à voir une sorte de matérialisation de l’aura de la jeune artiste, tout en conférant à l’image une qualité presque onirique, si chère aux surréalistes.

In the early 1920s, Man Ray, born Emmanuel Radnitzky (1890-1976), travelled to Paris where he was welcomed by the French painter and sculptor Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) as a representative of New York Dadaism. Over the next few years, this international avant-garde group conceived and gave birth to the Surrealist movement, and Man Ray was at the heart of it all, continuing to paint, but with new energy and vigour for photography.
In July 1922, responding to his desire to experiment, Man Ray moved into an artist’s studio at 31 bis, Rue Campagne Première, at the heart of the Montparnasse district. From Autumn 1929 onwards, he began making solarised portraits, the result of a laboratory accident which he transformed into a genuine artistic expression.
This “partial inversion of values in a photograph” (Dominique Baqué, Les Documents de la modernité, Paris, Éditions Jacqueline Chambon, 1993, p. 126), gave him the opportunity to yet again invent photography in his own style, becoming a figurehead of Surrealism and modernity.
In 1932, Man Ray met Meret Oppenheim (1913-1985), a young Swiss artist of German origin, who had recently moved to Paris, through the intermediary of the Swiss sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). Oppenheim, now recognised as a key figure in Surrealism — notably for her work, Fur Breakfast (1936) — began posing for him the following year.
In this portrait, taken in his studio at 31 bis, Rue Campagne Première, Man Ray captures the face of his model in profile, describing her as one of the most uninhibited women he ever met. The sharp contrast between light and shadow, the result of solarisation on the negative, accentuates Oppenheim's features, which appear textured and ringed in black. This process is a kind of materialisation of the young artist's aura, while at the same time conveying to the image an almost dreamlike quality, so dear to the Surrealists.
