En 1934, le photographe américain Edward Weston (1886-1958) découvre pour la première fois les dunes de sable près d'Oceano, une petite ville de la côte californienne au nord de Los Angeles, lors d'une mission pour le Public Works of Art Project. Frappé par la beauté du paysage, il y retourne deux ans plus tard, cette fois accompagné de sa muse et future épouse, Charis Wilson (1914-2009).
Weston, qui a largement capturé l’étendue des dunes, s'est également consacré à une série d'études de nus de Charis, dont la spontanéité à poser au milieu des dunes a donné lieu à certaines des images les plus emblématiques de sa carrière. Amy Conger raconte que ces photographies sont une réponse à l'attitude de Charis Wilson, qui « dévala la dune et resta dans sa position finale pour qu’il décidât s’il voulait la photographier ou non » (Amy Conger, Edward Weston : la forme du nu, traduit de l’anglais par Anne-Marie Terel, Paris, Phaïdon, 2005, p. 17).
Parmi les dix négatifs réalisés, Nude on Sand No. 2 est le plus remarquable. Weston le considérait lui-même comme son œuvre la plus réussie.
La pose de Wilson apparaît détendue et naturelle. Elle est couchée sur le ventre, la tête reposant entre ses bras, semblant plongée dans un sommeil paisible. Cette posture a permis à Weston de réaliser une étude du corps humain plutôt qu’un portrait psychologique : fidèle à sa vision moderniste, il a évité toute trace d’individualité au profit d’un accent purement formel sur la silhouette.
Dans cette photographie, Weston démontre également sa grande maîtrise technique de la lumière et des tonalités. Il utilise habilement l'ombre, qui dessine une ligne noire sur le corps de Wilson, soulignant ses courbes tout en créant un fort contraste avec le sable environnant. In 1934, the American photographer Edward Weston (1886-1958) first learned of the sand dunes near Oceano, a small town on the Californian coast north of Los Angeles, while on assignment for the Public Works of Art Project. Struck by the beauty of the landscape, he returned two years later, this time accompanied by his muse and future wife, Charis Wilson (1914-2009).
Weston, who amply captured the expanse of the dunes, also devoted himself to a series of nude studies of Charis, whose spontaneity to pose amidst the dunes led to some of the most emblematic images of his career. Amy Conger recounts that the images were a response to Charis Wilson's attitude, who “ran down the dune and stayed in her final position for him to decide whether he wanted to photograph her or not” (Amy Conger, Edward Weston : la forme du nu, translated from the English by Anne-Marie Terel, Paris, Phaïdon, 2005, p. 17).
Of the ten or so negatives made, Nude on Sand No. 2 is the most outstanding, and considered by Weston as his most successful.
Wilson's pose appears relaxed and natural. She is lying on her stomach, her head resting between her arms, seemingly in a peaceful sleep. This posture allowed Weston to create a study of the human body rather than a psychological portrait: true to his modernist vision, he avoided any trace of individuality in favour of a purely formal focus on the silhouette.
In this photograph, Weston also demonstrates his great technical mastery of light and overtones. He makes skilful use of the shadow, which draws a black line across Wilson's body, emphasising her curves while creating a strong contrast with the surrounding sand. The outlines of the naked figure are as if printed on a light, enigmatic background, giving the scene a timeless, even unreal quality. This treatment almost leads the photograph to abstraction, the body becoming a series of fluid forms rather than a distinct human entity.
