Je définis la ‘grande sculpture’ comme Masson définissait la ‘grande peinture’ - une sculpture dans laquelle les vides sont aussi importants que les pleins. Chacune des œuvres de Laurens est un tout cohérent, intégral, mais en même temps empreint d'une douce sensualité. Grande table, cariatide représente parfaitement la maturité du style d'Henri Laurens dans les années 1930. Lui qui avait commencé sa carrière dans un atelier d'ornementation architecturale (étudiant la maçonnerie, le dessin d'architecture et la sculpture d'œuvres décoratives), fut bouleversé par sa rencontre fatale avec Georges Braque. C’est cette rencontre qui l'a amené à mettre son talent de sculpteur et ses connaissances structurelles au service des nouvelles préoccupations du cubisme. Laurens s’oriente alors dans deux voies : sa phase cubiste à partir de 1911 et sa phase formelle à partir de 1932. Cependant, la division entre les deux est loin d'être distincte et il est possible de voir des éléments de sa période formelle dès 1921-22 et d'autres expérimentations au cours des années 1920. C'est également au cours de cette dernière période que Laurens a exploré de manière plus approfondie les possibilités offertes par l'utilisation du bronze comme matériau.
La présente œuvre, conçue en 1938, témoigne de l’intérêt de l’artiste pour ce thème mais également de sa formation architecturale. Ici, la cariatide soutient le poids de la structure en utilisant toute la longueur de son corps. La facilité apparente avec laquelle cette figure soutient la structure qui la surplombe contraste avec les représentations traditionnelles de la figure soutenant l'entablement sur sa tête. Ici, l'œuvre est faite de courbes, expression ultime de l'évolution de Laurens vers des préoccupations purement formelles et esthétiques. La ligne exagérée de sa poitrine ainsi que ses bras et ses jambes qui s’entrelacent insufflent à la cariatide une élégance et une fluidité toute particulière.

Grande table, cariatide is a prime example illustrating the maturity of Henri Laurens' style in the 1930s. Laurens, who had begun his career in an architectural ornamentation workshop (studying masonry, architectural drawing and decorative sculpture), took a pivotal turn after his fateful meeting with Georges Braque. That encounter led him to use his talent as a sculptor and his structural knowledge to venture into the new concerns of Cubism. Laurens then embarked on two paths: his Cubist phase from 1911 and his formal phase from 1932. However, the division between the two is far from distinct and it is possible to see elements of his formal period as early as 1921-22 and other experiments during the 1920s. It was also during the latter period that Laurens explored in greater depth the possibilities offered by the use of bronze as a material.
The present work, conceived in 1938, bears witness not only to the artist's interest in this particular theme – that of a caryatid - but also in his architectural training. Here, the caryatid supports the weight of the structure using the full length of her body. The apparent ease with which this figure supports the structure above it contrasts with traditional representations of the figure supporting the entablature on its head. Here, the work is made up of curves, the ultimate expression of Laurens's evolution towards purely formal and aesthetic concerns. The exaggerated line of the chest and the intertwining arms and legs give the caryatid a particular elegance and fluidity.
