"Glenn Ligon's practice is a dispute with our demand for clarity and consistency in matters of appearance and identity. The appearance and identity of Ligon's work are directly implicated in this dispute; indeed, the more of Ligon's work you try to consider at once, the more strenuously it resists summary description. The work draws its strength from the range of ways Ligon has devised to confound rather than satisfy our expectations of personal, cultural, and artistic narratives."
