Sélectionné par l’architecte allemand Eckhart Muthesius pour l’aménagement de la salle à manger de la caravane de chasse du Maharajah d’Indore, cet ensemble illustre l’esprit d’avant-garde qui caractérise le goût du jeune prince. Visionnaire passionné de modernité le dernier Maharajah d’Indore fera construire et aménager par son ami Eckart Muthesius le premier palais moderniste en Inde : Manik Bagh. Il sera également le commanditaire de l’aménagement intérieur d’un wagon de train, de deux avions et d’une caravane de chasse dont la table et les chaises présentées ici (lot 32) meublaient la salle à manger. Les projets d’une péniche et d’une maison d’été n’ont quant à eux jamais vu le jour.
Composé de quatre camions positionnés en étoile, l’ajustement d’une tenture centrale permet à l’ensemble de la caravane de former cinq espaces distincts. Richesse et modernité s’entremêlent dans un aménagement intérieur fait de mobilier tubulaire à la simplicité graphique, d’assises au fini rouge et d’une table à plateau noir ; un ensemble élégant à la croisée du Bauhaus et de l’UAM.
Selected by German architect Eckhart Muthesius to furnish the dining room of the Maharaja of Indore's hunting caravan, this ensemble illustrates the avant-garde spirit that characterized the young prince's taste. A visionary with a passion for modernity, the last Maharaja of Indore commissioned his friend Eckart Muthesius to build and fit out the first modernist palace in India: Manik Bagh. He also commissioned the interior design of a private railway car, two airplanes and a hunting caravan whose table and chairs shown here (lot 32) furnished the dining room. Projects for a barge and a summer house never saw the light of day.
Comprising four trucks positioned in a star formation, the adjustment of a central curtain allows the whole caravan to form five distinct spaces. Richness and modernity intertwine in an interior design featuring tubular furniture of graphic simplicity, red-finished seats and a black-topped table; an elegant ensemble at the crossroads of Bauhaus and UAM (The French Union of Modern Artists).
