JEAN-FRANÇOIS MILLET, STUDY OF TWO BATHERS, BLACK CHALK ON LIGHT BROWN PAPER
Typical of Millet’s early work, these bathers are part of the iconographic register of nudes dear to the artist in the years 1845-1849, and characteristic of his manière fleurie reminiscent of an academic education (L. Lepoittevin, Jean-François Millet. Images et symboles, Cherbourg, 1990, p. 27). The scenes are described by Robert L. Herbet in the catalogue of the 1975 exhibition at the Grand Palais as “a large number of nudes to which he adds only a few vague notations of trees or ponds, but without any precise literary reference, and detached from any anecdote”, as in the present drawing (Millet, exh. cat., Paris, Grand Palais, 1975-1976, p. 46). Also typical of these pierre noire nude studies, are the sketchy extremities of the bodies (feet and hands), which appear almost unfinished, as in two studies of nude couples dated 1846-1848, entitled Confidences, in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and in the Musée du Louvre (op. cit., 1975-1976, nos. 24-25). Alexandra Murphy relates the present drawing to another Nymph standing among the reeds, also in pierre noire, in the Szépmüvészeti Museum in Budapest (inv. 1935-2743).
A copy of Alexandra Murphy's certificate dated 18 June 2003 will be given to the buyer. She dates the drawing to 1847-1848.
