Hyperréalistes et pop, les photographies de David LaChapelle présentent, au-delà de leurs compositions complexes et souvent provoquantes, la vision forte du photographe de la culture contemporaine et du consumérisme, thème qu’il décline et renouvelle en différentes séries tout au long de sa carrière. Il commence à travailler au magazine Interview créé par Andy Warhol. Cette première expérience lui ouvre par la suite d’autres portes auprès de Vogue, Vanity Fair ou encore Rolling Stone, où le photographe réalise des portraits de Lance Armstrong, Uma Thurman, Kanye West ou encore Hilary Clinton. En 2006, il prend la décision de quitter toute production commerciale pour se concentrer sur son travail artistique.
La série Jesus is my Homeboy, réalisée en 2003, met en scène le personnage christique dans des reconstitutions anonymes et contemporaines. Ce n’est pas la première fois que David LaChapelle reprend cette figure, comme en atteste les œuvres Piéta with Courtney Love, 2006, ou Passion of the Christ, 2006. Composée de six tableaux, cette série s’inscrit dans le travail de l’artiste sur la peinture de la Renaissance italienne à laquelle il fait référence dès le début de sa carrière lorsqu’il réalise des portraits reprenant l’iconographie de l’époque, mais également au pop art avec l’utilisation de couleurs saturées et des références à la culture publicitaire.
Avec The Last Supper, LaChapelle nous propose une adaptation de La Cène, œuvre particulièrement mythique et mystique de Léonard de Vinci, dont le personnage principal de la photographie reprend la pose et les couleurs. Les apôtres sont ici des marginaux et au nombre de treize, le photographe ayant intégré une femme au tableau. Humour, religion, érotisme… cette composition reprend les symboles archétypaux de notre époque dans un ensemble visuellement percutant, en faisant une œuvre particulièrement emblématique du travail du photographe.

This is not the first time that David LaChapelle has used this symbolic figure, as demonstrated by the works Piéta with Courtney Love, 2006, or Passion of the Christ, 2006. The series of six representations is part of the artist’s work on Italian Renaissance painting which inspired him from the start of his career when he produced portraits using the iconography of the time, but also in pop art with the use of saturated overtones and references to advertising culture.

In Lachapelle’s work, the apostles are depicted as marginal people and are thirteen in number, the photographer having integrated a woman into the picture. Humour, religion, eroticism… this composition features the archetypal symbols of our time in a visually striking entity, producing a work particularly emblematic of the photographer's work.
