En 1826, le lithographe Charles Motte propose à Eugène Delacroix d’illustrer le Faust de Goethe qui vient d’être traduit en français par Albert Stapfer. L’ouvrage paraît en 1827 et il connaît un grand succès au moment où l’artiste présente au Salon la Mort de Sardanapale (D. de Font-Réaulx, Delacroix. La liberté d’ être soi, Paris, 2018, p. 307). Les aventures de Faust, homme de science et de raison qui ne peut résister à la tentation de la jeune Marguerite, séduit d’emblée le jeune artiste. Il choisit lui-même les scènes qu’il souhaite illustrer. Dans le présent dessin au décor médiéval, la composition, qui diffère de celle retenue pour la lithographie, illustre le moment où Méphistophélès, le diable, apparaît devant le savant, Faust, assis dans son atelier et lui demande : ‘Pourquoi tout ce vacarme ? que demande Monsieur ? qu’y a -t-il pour son service ?’ (L. Delteil, Eugène Delacroix. The Graphic Work. A Catalogue Raisonné, San Francisco, réédition 1997, n°62). La créature maléfique propose au savant un pacte déraisonnable qu’il accepte : lui vendre son âme en échange de la jeunesse retrouvée qui lui permettra de séduire la jeune Marguerite.
Delacroix va travailler à plusieurs reprises sur ce thème en changeant la position des personnages tandis que l’intérieur de l’atelier de Faust avec une étagère en haut de la composition remplie de livres, flacons de laboratoire, bibelots et crânes sera récurrente et presque inchangée. Il existe une huile sur toile, présentée au Salon de 1827-1828, où la position des deux personnages est inversée (fig.1 ; Londres, Wallace collection, inv. P324 ; J. Ingamells, The Wallace Collection. Catalogue of Pictures. II. French Nineteeth Century, Londres, 1986, n° P324, ill.) et deux dessins : une esquisse au graphite, de composition similaire au tableau mais en sens inverse, à la Houghton Library de l’université de Harvard à Cambridge et une étude au lavis brun plus aboutie provenant de la collection Thaw, aujourd’hui à la Pierpont Morgan Library and Museum de New York (inv. 2017.62 ; fig. 2).

The story of Faust, a scholar who could not resist the temptation of the young Marguerite, immediately seduced the young artist. He chose himself the scenes he wished to illustrate. The present medieval-themed drawing, which differs from the one chosen for the lithograph in the book, illustrates the moment when Mephistopheles, the devil, appears in front of Faust (L. Delteil, Eugène Delacroix. The Graphic Work. A Catalogue Raisonné, San Francisco, 1997, no. 62), seated in his study, and asks him: ‘Why all this commotion, what is the gentleman asking, what can I do for him?’ The evil creature proposes to the wise man an unreasonable pact, which he accepts: Faust must sell his soul to the devil in exchange for youth, which will enable him to seduce the young Marguerite.
Delacroix would be inspired by the subject several times, changing the position of the characters while keeping the interior of Faust’s studio, with a shelf at the top of the composition filled with books, laboratory flasks, trinkets and skulls, almost unchanged. A painting on canvas, presented at the Salon of 1827-1828, reverses the position of the two figures (fig. 1; Wallace collection, London, inv. P324). There are also two drawings: a graphite sketch, similar in composition to the painting but in the opposite direction, is at the Houghton Library at Harvard, and a more finished wash drawing from the Thaw collection, now at the Morgan Library and Museum, inv. 2017.62 (fig. 2).
