Née dans une famille aristocratique, Magdalena Abakanowicz est marquée par les tumultes qui ont secoué la Pologne au cours du XXe siècle : la Seconde Guerre mondiale et l’occupation nazie (en 1943, un soldat allemand ivre tire sur sa mère qui y perdra un bras), le joug soviétique ensuite et la guerre froide. Son œuvre s’enracine dans ces traumas et prend d’abord la forme, dans les années 1960, de très grandes sculptures abstraites et souples, réalisées en fibre végétale et en tissu, souvent suspendues, questionnant les repères habituels de la représentation d’œuvres en trois dimensions.
Abakanowicz a ensuite recours à la résine et opère un retour à la figuration, avec d’étranges personnages – seuls ou en foules, parfois sans tête ou bien à l’échine courbée, comme ployant sous le poids de l’histoire – dont la présence fantomatique suggère un sentiment de vulnérabilité en même temps que de dignité. Le bronze intervient plus tard dans la trajectoire de l’artiste, un matériau dont elle dira qu’il est un « menteur irréductible, capable de tout imiter – que ce soit la peau ou la pierre » (J. Collins, J. Reichardt, Magdalena Abakanowicz: Bronze sculpture. Llandudno, 1996, p. 15). Gruby en polonais signifie gros, épais. Anthropomorphe, incongru, humain sans l’être tout à fait, Gruby semble nous fixer pour mieux remuer en nous les fondements de notre humanité.
Born into an aristocratic family, Magdalena Abakanowicz is marked by the turmoil that shook Poland during the 20th century: World War II and the Nazi occupation (in 1943, a drunk German soldier shoots her mother who lost her arm), then the Soviet yoke and the Cold War. Her work is rooted in these traumas and first takes on the form, in the 1960s, of very large abstract and flexible sculptures, made of plant fiber and fabric, often suspended, questioning the usual benchmarks of representation for three-dimensional works.
Abakanowicz then resorts to resin and operates a return to figuration, with strange characters — alone or in crowds, sometimes headless or even with bent spines, as if stooping under the weight of history —whose ghostly presence suggests a sense of vulnerability as well as dignity. Bronze intervenes later on in the artist's trajectory, a material which she describes as an "irreducible liar, capable of imitating anything—whether it is skin or stone" (J. Collins, J. Reichardt, Magdalena Abakanowicz: Bronze sculpture. Llandudno, 1996, p. 15). Gruby in Polish means big, thick. Anthropomorphic, incongruous, human but not quite, Gruby seems to stare at us in order to actually stir the foundations of our humanity.
