Alors qu'il n’est pas encore sculpteur, François-Xavier Lalanne accepte une place de gardien au Musée du Louvre au cours de l'hiver 1948-49. Pendant cette période, il fréquente tous les jours le département des antiquités orientales et plus particulièrement les œuvres venues d'Egypte, de Mésopotamie et de la Rome antique. Là, pendant de longues heures, son œil enregistre les formes, les courbes, la stylisation spécifique de cette sculpture et son esprit élabore les prémices de son futur vocabulaire plastique dont on retrouve dans ce Singe attentif II toute les caractéristiques : une figure aux traits hiératiques, éclairée d’un sourire tranquille, comme celui de la statuette de Thot en Babouin réalisée vers 500 avant J. C. (inv. AF2350).
Ce Singe attentif II était placé par François-Xavier Lalanne sur un bout de canapé dans sa maison-atelier de Ury permettant de présenter la sculpture à une hauteur idéale sans que la queue ne touche le sol. Lors de l’achat de l’œuvre, la table a été offerte par l’artiste et repeinte avec un motif en écaille de tortue afin de l’adapter à la décoration du bureau du collectionneur.
Before he turned full time to sculpting, François-Xavier Lalanne took a job as security guard at the Musée du Louvre over the winter of 1948-49. During this period, he visited the Department of Oriental Antiquities daily, particularly interested in works from Egypt, Mesopotamia and Ancient Rome. His eye spent many hours registering the shape, lines and specific stylisation of this sculpture and his mind laid the foundations of his future artistic vocabulary, perfectly embodied in his Singe attentif II : a figure with hieratic features, lit by a quiet smile, such as that of the statuette of Thoth as Baboon made around 500 BC (inv. AF2350).
This Singe attentif II was placed by François-Xavier Lalanne on a side table in his house-workshop in Ury allowing the sculpture to be presented at an ideal height without the tail touching the ground. When purchasing the work, the table was gifted by the artist and repainted with a tortoiseshell pattern to match the decor of the collector's office.
