Shiraga
Membre fondateur du groupe d’avant-garde Gutaï, Kazuo Shiraga a développé à partir de 1954 une œuvre radicalement nouvelle qui fait table rase de la peinture traditionnelle japonaise, le nihonga, et embrasse avec force les possibilités de la modernité. Au sortir du second conflit mondial, il appartient à cette jeune génération d’artistes de l’archipel qui vont chercher dans la réinvention de leurs moyens d’expression la réponse à la sidération vécue. C’est dans ce contexte que Shiraga va fonder Zero-Kai en 1952, un collectif dont l’objectif est un art qui partirait du « point zéro », avant de rejoindre en 1955 le groupe Gutai, « concret » en japonais, organisé autour de la figure tutélaire de Jiro Yoshihara. La jeune garde japonaise s’est donnée une ambition : expérimenter librement dans la matière le rejet des conventions artistiques du passé, « faire ce que personne n’avait encore entrepris ». Ainsi, écrivent-ils dans leur Manifeste de 1956 : « L’art Gutai ne transforme pas, ne détourne pas la matière ; il lui donne vie. Il participe à la réconciliation de l’esprit humain et de la matière, qui ne lui est ni assimilée ni soumise et qui, une fois révélée en tant que telle se mettra à parler et même à crier » (in catalogue de l’exposition Japon des avant-gardes, 1910-1970, Musée national d’art moderne de Paris, 1986).
Shiraga, qui va rapidement émerger comme l’une des têtes de pont de ce mouvement, a trouvé sa voie d’expression dans une démarche profondément contestataire, et dont T56 est issue. Son premier geste fort est de poser la toile sans châssis à même le sol, à l’image de Jackson Pollock, dont le travail circule au Japon depuis 1951. Sa démarche toutefois est différente de celle du père de l’Expressionisme abstrait. Suspendu à une corde qui va lui permettre de se maintenir entièrement dans l’œuvre, Shiraga va déposer des amas de peinture sur le tissu. C’est alors qu’il va commencer à les étaler pieds nus, dans une forme de transe divinatoire où seul le mouvement incontrôlé du corps creuse dans les couleurs sillons et éclaboussures. Comme dans T56, ces œuvres peintes avec les pieds sont empreintes d’une violence brute, fruit d’un corps-à-corps exténuant entre l’artiste et son support. En partant du centre de l’œuvre, Shiraga a ici taché la pureté blanche de la toile par d’épaisses pâtes de rouges carmin et sang, mêlées à de larges glissements de noir, de blanc, et en profondeur, à des giclures de jaune et bleu. Plus l’œil s’éloigne du cœur névralgique de l’œuvre, plus le mouvement du corps se fait lisible dans les éclats dynamiques de la couleur.
La démarche de Shiraga, si elle a pu être influencée par Pollock, n’en demeure pas moins unique. À la fois parce qu’il abandonne l’outil traditionnel du peintre et parce qu’il s’affranchit de toute notion de perfectibilité de l’œuvre. Cette spiritualité historiquement située, et qui se traduit en peinture par un abandon total de l’esprit, le distingue nettement de ses contemporains d’Occident, qu’il s’agisse d’Allan Kaprow et ses happenings ou d’Yves Klein et ses Anthropométries. Mûrie dans un climat quasi-autarcique au Japon, l’œuvre de Shiraga attire rapidement l’œil du découvreur Michel Tapié, qui voyage à Osaka en 1957. Avec le galeriste Rodolphe Stadler à Paris, il va avoir une influence déterminante dans la promotion de son travail à l’étranger : d’abord avec l’exposition de groupe Métamorphisme en 1959 puis avec sa première présentation monographique en 1962 – année où il peint T56, cette collaboration se poursuivant jusqu’aux années 1990. Aux Etats-Unis, il est accroché à la Martha Jackson Gallery dans une exposition sur Gutai en 1958. L’accueil critique sera toutefois mitigé outre-Atlantique, où Dore Ashton dénonce une pâle copie de Pollock. C’est sans nul doute parce que Shiraga a réussi un tour de force, dont il est alors difficile de mesurer l’ampleur, tant l’art est querelle de clochers entre puissances occidentales : inventer, comme dans T56, une voie qui lui est propre et qui va pourtant pleinement prendre part au tremblement culturel d’après-guerre.

His first bold move was to place the unstretched canvas right on the ground, like Jackson Pollock, whose work had been making its way around Japan since 1951. However, his approach was different to that of the father of abstract expressionism. Tethered to a rope that would ensure he stayed entirely inside the work, Shiraga deposited masses of paint on the fabric. Then he began spreading them with his bare feet in a sort of divinatory trance where nothing but the body's uncontrolled movements burrowed into the colours to form hollows and splatters. As in T56, these works painted with feet are imbued with a raw violence, the result of an exhausting battle between the artist and the medium. Moving out from the centre of the work, here Shiraga stained the pure white of the canvas with thick pastes in carmine and blood red, mixed with wide streaks of black and white and, in the depths, splashes of yellow and blue. As the eye strays from the work's nerve centre, the movement of the body becomes more evident in the dynamic bursts of colour.
Shiraga's approach, though influenced by Pollock, was nonetheless unique. Because he abandoned the traditional tool of the painter and because he emancipated himself from any notion of the perfectibility of the work. The artist painted T56 with his feet because his hands had become too agile: "My hands were imprisoned by the teachings of calligraphy and I had to free myself" (in exhibition catalogue, ibid.). In addition, the work is the fruit of a spiritual quest, deeply rooted in Japanese culture. In the early 1960s, at the time when he painted T56, Shiraga began to explore Buddhism, going so far as to become a priest at the esoteric Tendai School in 1971. In its historical context, this spirituality translates in his painting to a total abandonment of the mind, clearly differentiating him from his western contemporaries, such as Allan Kaprow and his happenings and Yves Klein and his Anthropométries. Having matured in the near-absolutism of Japan, Shiraga's work soon caught the eye of the talent scout Michel Tapié, who travelled to Osaka in 1957. Along with gallerist Rodolphe Stadler in Paris, he would have a decisive influence in promoting Shiraga's work overseas: first with the group show Métamorphisme in 1959, then with his first monographic exhibition in 1962 – the year in which he painted T56. The collaboration would continue through the 1990s. In the United States, his work was first hung at the Martha Jackson Gallery in a 1958 Gutai show. His critical reception was mixed across the Atlantic, where Dore Ashton dismissed him as a pale imitation of Pollock. This was undoubtedly because Shiraga had pulled off a tour de force whose magnitude was difficult to measure (the art world being subsumed as it is by parochial disputes between western powers): to invent, as he did with T56, a uniquely personal path that still managed to play a part in the post-war cultural earthquake.
