Après des études de sciences politiques et sociologie, Hiroshi Sugimoto quitte son Japon natal pour les États-Unis afin de se former au métier de photographe, medium qu’il pratique dès son plus jeune âge. En 1974, il est diplômé du Art Center College of Design de Pasadena, en Californie. Durant cette période, il est exposé aux courants minimalistes et conceptuels et se dit fortement influencé par le travail de Marcel Duchamp et des Surréalistes.
Après avoir réalisé la série Diorama qu’il photographie dans différents musées d’Histoire Naturelle, il est commissionné en 1999 par le Deutsche Guggenheim à Berlin pour réaliser la série Portraits. C’est alors au musée Madame Tussauds de Londres qu’il photographie les répliques en cire de personnalités publiques, politiques et écrivains, réunis dans un ensemble allant de Richard I d’Angleterre à Lady Diana.
Présentés sur fond noir, ces portraits plus vrais que nature s’inscrivent par leur composition dans la veine minimaliste étudiée par l’artiste, tout en respectant les codes picturaux des maitres anciens. En effet, les artistes de la Renaissance tels que Hans Holbein, Anthony Van Dyck, ou Rembrandt, sont autant de références revendiquées par Sugimoto dans cette série. Peinture, sculpture, photographie ; en jouant sur l’ambivalence et la porosité des media, il donne ainsi un nouveau degré d’immortalité à ses sujets et approfondit son travail autour du temps et de sa représentation. Grave et interdit, ce portrait de Catherine Howard, cinquième épouse d’Henri VIII, s’inscrit dans ce corpus, entre tradition et contemporanéité.
La série Portraits a fait l’objet de plusieurs expositions dans des institutions majeures à l’international comme le Guggenheim Berlin, Bilbao et New York entre 2000 et 2001, ainsi qu’à la White Cube Gallery à Londres, à la Fraenkel Gallery à San Francisco et à la galerie Koyanagi à Tokyo.
After studying political science and sociology, Hiroshi Sugimoto left his native Japan for the United States to study photography, a medium he practiced from an early age. In 1974, he graduated from the Art Centre College of Design in Pasadena, California, a period where, in his own words, he was strongly influenced by the work of Marcel Duchamp and the Surrealists.
After his Diorama series, photographing in various Natural History museums, he was commissioned in 1999 by the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin to produce a Portraits series. It was then, at Madame Tussauds in London, that he photographed wax replicas of public figures, politicians and writers, ranging from Richard I of England to Lady Diana.
Presented against a black background, these larger-than-life portraits speak to the minimalist studies of the artist, while respecting the pictorial codes of the Old Master painters. Indeed, Renaissance artists such as Hans Holbein, Anthony Van Dyck, or Rembrandt, are all referenced by Sugimoto in this series. Painting, sculpture, photography; there is an ambivalence created across these mediums, and Sugimoto successfully portrays a new aspect of immortality on these subjects, further supporting the key elements of his work around time and it’s representation.
