Delacroix never exhibited his sketched or drawn ‘flower portraits’ to the public, except for two large paintings, shown at the Salon of 1849 and are now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (inv. 67.187.60) and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (inv. 2308; Paris, 1998-1999, op. cit., nos. 29, 30). Looking at the carefully aligned flowers in the composition, Lee Johnson stated that the present drawing was probably made in the Spring of 1849 in the Jardin des Plantes, thanks to the hospitality of the botanist Adrien de Jussieu (1797-1853) whom Delacroix had met in February, as he noted in his diary: ‘I have a long conversation after dinner with Jussieu about flowers in relation to my paintings. I promised to go and see him in the Spring. He will show me the greenhouses and make me obtain permission to study them’ (Paris, 1998-1999, op. cit., p. 126).

Delacroix n’exposera jamais au grand public ses ‘portraits de fleurs’ esquissés ou dessinés hormis deux grands tableaux à la composition achevée au Salon de 1849, aujourd’hui conservés au Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York (inv. 67.187.60) et au Philadelphia Museum of Art (inv. 2308 ; , 1998- 1999, n°29, 30). Selon Lee Johnson, le présent dessin, au vu de l’agencement des fleurs soigneusement alignées, a sans doute été réalisé au printemps de cette même année 1849 au jardin des Plantes grâce à l’accueil bienveillant du botaniste Adrien de Jussieu (1797-1853) qu’il avait rencontré en février selon son Journal : ‘J’ai une longue conversation après dîner avec Jussieu sur les fleurs à propos de mes tableaux. Je lui ai promis d’aller le voir au printemps. Il me montrera les serres et me fera obtenir toute permission pour l’étude’ (, 1998-1999, p. 126).
