FERDINAND-VICTOR-EUGÈNE DELACROIX, A STANDING GREEK MAN, GRAPHITE

This study of a man is part of a group of studies of figures in Greek costume which Delacroix made during the Massacres at Chios (1822) and shortly afterwards, between 1824 and 1827 (see A. Sérullaz, Musée du Louvre, Inventaire général des dessins. École française. Dessins d’Eugène Delacroix, Paris, 1984, I, nos. 115, 116, 117, 118, 118v, 119, 120, 121, 122, ill.). In his search for Greek costumes to be used in his his paintings, Delacroix could rely on Count Demetrius of Palatino (1794-1849), who lent him costumes of palikares (Greek soldiers). The above drawing shows a man wearing a Souliote costume. This community in the Souli mountain range in Epirus is known for its role in the Greek War of Independence (Sérullaz, op. cit., p. 99).
