Précurseur de l’esthétique CoBrA dès 1947, Karel Appel fonde le mouvement en 1948 en compagnie d’Asger Jorn, Corneille, et plus tard Pierre Alechinsky. Peut-être le dernier des mouvements avant-garde du XXe, CoBrA se construit en opposition aux calculs de l’abstraction des années 50. Révolution créative, le mouvement promeut une liberté d’expression détachée de la théorie, et ancrée dans le folklore et la couleur. Célébré dans le cadre d’une exposition devenue iconique au Stedelijk d’Amsterdam en 1949, CoBrA se relocalise à Paris en 1950. Si Amsterdam est la ville de la jeunesse d’Appel, Paris est celle de son évolution. Soutenue par critiques et marchands, son œuvre y devient indissociable de la vie artistique parisienne. Elle y rencontre un succès immodéré, culminant notamment lors d’une grande exposition au palais des beaux-arts de Liège en 1951. C’est durant ces années que sa pate coloriste éclate et devient synonyme du mouvement CoBrA. Child with a Green ball, (1951) est un exemple probant de la richesse qui caractérise la palette d’Appel. Les primaires tels que l’ocre rouge, le jaune vif ou encore les bleus et noirs minéraux, contrastent avec le blanc en créant de remarquables contrepoints. L’œuvre d’Appel se distille dans la couleur et la matière. Travaillant des deux mains, le peintre réserve la droite pour le dessin, et fait jaillir de la gauche le pigment du tube.

Perhaps one of the last avant-garde movement of the 20th century, CoBrA was conceived in opposition to the theorization of the abstraction of the 50s. Rooted in folklore and color, the movement foregrounds creative revolution. Celebrated in the now iconic 1949 exhibition at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum, CoBrA finds a new home in Paris in 1950. If Amsterdam is the city of Appel’s youth, Paris is that of his evolution. Counting on the support of critics and dealers alike, his work becomes symbolic of the Parisian artistic scene of the time. His immoderate success notably culminates with the important 1951 exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Liège. During these seminal years, Appel finds his truly colorist style, which becomes synonymous with CoBrA. Child with a Green ball, (1951) is a probing example of Appel’s characteristically rich palette. Primary colors such as red ochres, vibrant yellows or mineral blues and blacks contrast with the whites, creating superb counterpoints. Appel’s work is entrenched in color and matter. Working with both hands, the painter uses the right one to draw, and the left one to squeeze the pigment out of the tube.

This character, straight from an imaginary bestiary à la Kafka is the perfect illustration of the subjects which inhabit Appel’s works.
