Née en 1913 à Berlin, Meret Oppenheim vit la plus grande partie de sa jeunesse en Suisse. Elle arrive à Paris à l’âge de 18 ans, en mai 1932, pour devenir artiste.
Alberto Giacometti la présente à Man Ray et au groupe surréaliste. Dès le mois d’octobre 1933 elle expose avec eux à Copenhague, Paris, Londres et New York, devenant ainsi un membre à part entière du groupe surréaliste, et son Déjeuner en fourrure (1936) la rend célèbre.
Meret Oppenheim pose pour Man Ray de 1932 à 1936. Il réalise plusieurs portraits d’elle, mais aussi des nus, et surtout une séance de pose dans l’atelier de Louis Marcoussis, dont une photographie, Erotique voilée, sera publiée dans Minotaure en 1934.
Dans cette série, Man Ray s’oppose à la vision moderniste de l’époque, qui célébrait l’ère de la machine. L’ironie est bien présente ici, à travers l’érotisation du sujet, de même que la mise en scène révélée à travers les images qui fonctionnent comme un roman-photo : Marcoussis, affublé d’une barbe pour ressembler à Landru, semble vouloir attacher Meret Oppenheim derrière la roue de la presse d’imprimerie. Elle prend un air terrorisé sous l’action du meurtrier. Dans ce contexte, l’encre noire ressemble au sang dégoulinant sur le bras de la victime. De toute la série, c’est finalement une seule image, la plus mystérieuse de toutes, qui sera retenue par Man Ray et publiée dans la revue surréaliste. « La beauté convulsive sera érotique-voilée, explosante-fixe, magique-circonstancielle ou ne sera pas » écrit Breton dans L’Amour fou.
Erotique voilée est un nu anti-conventionnel (qui oppose le corps nu et vulnérable à une machine), provocant, anti-bourgeois et irrationnel, qui renvoie à la définition de la beauté par Lautréamont : « beau comme la rencontre fortuite sur une table de dissection d’un parapluie et d’une machine à coudre. »

The irony is very present here, through the eroticization of the subject, as revealed by the scenography through images which function like a photo novel: Marcoussis, decked out with a beard to resemble Landru, seems to want to tie up Meret Oppenheim, behind the wheel of the printing press. She seems terrified as the murderer's proceeds. In this context, the black ink looks like blood dripping down the victim's arm. Of the entire series, it is ultimately a single image, the most mysterious of all, that Man Ray picked for publication in the Surrealist review. “Convulsive beauty will be erotic-veiled, explosive-fixed, magical-circumstantial or will not be,” Breton wrote in L’Amour fou.
