C’est en apposant méthodiquement différentes couches de pigments sur la toile que Serge Poliakoff donne la profondeur des formes qui font la beauté de ses toiles. Le bleu sous-jacent de Composition (1959) transperce ici le rouge crimson, ajoutant volume à la forme. La surface du tableau ondule ainsi au gré de la transparence des couleurs.
En 1959, la réputation de l’artiste n’est plus à faire. Célébré à l’international, Poliakoff expose à Bruxelles, Cologne, New York, mais aussi à Amsterdam et Milan. On situe dorénavant son œuvre dans l’histoire de la peinture du XXe. Trois ans plus tard, il représentera la France à la biennale de Venise. A travers cette notoriété transparait un artiste au sommet de son art. Composition (1959) témoigne de cette maitrise. Des aplats de couleurs texturées tapissent élégamment la toile, faisant intensément vibrer l’espace pictural. Poliakoff délaisse la ligne et la dimension graphique en faveur de la pâte et la couleur, élaborant ainsi un style véritablement unique. Le plan chromatique est devenu autosuffisant. Les formes n’ont plus besoin d’être définies par le biais d’un modérateur, elles se suffisent à elle-même.

By methodically applying different layers of pigment to the canvas, Serge Poliakoff gave depth to the forms that lend beauty to his canvases. The underlying blue in Composition (1959) occasionally pierces through the crimson red, adding volume to the shape. It causes the surface of the painting to ripple with the transparency of the colours.
In 1959, the artist’s reputation is well established. Celebrated internationally, Poliakoff is shown in Brussels, Cologne, New York, Amsterdam and Milan. His oeuvre finds its place in the history of 20th-century painting. Three years later, he would represent France at the Venice Biennale. Beyond the fame is an artist at the peak of his art. Composition (1959) bears witness to this mastery. Textured blocks of colour elegantly populate the canvas, causing the pictorial space to vibrate with intensity. Poliakoff relinquishes lines and the graphic dimension in favour of pastes and colour, thus developing a truly unique style. The chromatic plane becomes self-sufficient. The shapes no longer need to be defined through a moderator, they suffice unto themselves.
