Figure phare de la mode New-Yorkaise, Elsa Peretti pose devant l’objectif du photographe de mode Helmut Newton en 1975, dans un costume dessiné par le designer Halston. Capturée sur la terrasse de son appartement, l’air nonchalant, dans un body noir accessoirisé de longs gants allant jusqu’aux coudes, de collants en résille, d’escarpins, ainsi que d’un masque à oreilles de lapin suggérant tout l’univers érotique qui s’y cache, elle pose dans l’espace vertigineux de Manhattan.
Archétype de la femme lascive, adossée sur un muret de briques caractéristiques de la ville et cigarette à la main, elle incarne l’empire Playboy des années 1970. Son intimité sensuelle se dévoile dans la sphère publique dominée par des sky-scrapers, dont les yeux, ou plutôt les fenêtres, sont tournés vers elle. Ils la surplombent par leur hauteur oppressante et dépeignent un certain voyeurisme typique de l’oeuvre de Newton. Cette photographie habillera d’ailleurs les pages de son ouvrage culte Helmut Newton, White Women, publié en 1976.
Elsa Peretti semble comme guettée, observée par cette modernité géométrique qui l’entoure, puis par cette lumière forte et contrastée inspirée de Brassaï et d’Enrich Salomon, que le photographe admire beaucoup. Celles-ci lui donnent alors le premier rôle au sein de l’image et la positionnent sur un piédestal lumineux dans les hauteurs New-Yorkaises, bien qu’elle porte une tenue destinée à la vie nocturne, à l’intimité.
Cette surexposition ne la rend pas pour autant vulnérable.
