The present work was published as an illustration for Frederic Remington's article "Training Cavalry Horses to Jump Obstacles" in the September 19, 1891 issue of . Inscriptions describing the activities include remarks such as: '"Hit 'im again"--' (lower center), '"Good boy."--' (upper right) and '"Make 'im go--make 'im go?"--' (lower right). A previous owner of the present work, Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge, was the niece of John D. Rockefeller, Sr. and a noted collector of Western sculpture.
