Après s'être essentiellement consacré à la sculpture en relief durant ses années Dada et surréalistes, en 1930, Arp est déjà de plus en plus attiré par les volumes expansifs et dilatés de la ronde-bosse. Se concentrant toujours plus sur des formes biomorphiques, il travaille inlassablement à créer des sculptures basées sur un langage de compositions bourgeonnantes et organiques. Son art gagne en innovation et en variété à un degré tel qu'Alfred Barr le décrira comme «Un laboratoire à lui seul pour la découverte de nouvelles formes» (in ibid., p. 7).
Arp fonde ses créations sur des principes de métamorphose incessante, en écho aux procédés de régénérescence et d'évolution de la nature. Ses formes arrondies et biotiques communiquent souvent une impression de gonflement et d'élargissement, comme si elles brûlaient d'énergie intérieure. Comme son titre l'indique, la présente sculpture aborde le thème du corps humain endormi, tout en cristallisant un instant de discorde: si la silhouette dégage une idée de repos, elle semble en même temps être aux prises avec des remous et des contorsions. Par la même, Sommeil tourmenté souscrit entièrement à l'intérêt de Arp pour la métaphysique, et à son désir de représenter le grand mystère de la forme humaine comme un archétype du monde vivant.

After devoting himself principally to relief sculpture throughout his Dada and Surrealist years, Arp found himself by 1930 increasingly drawn to the expanded volumes of sculpture in the round. With a growing focus on biomorphic form, he would work tirelessly towards the development of sculptural creations based on a language of burgeoning, organic compositions. So innovative and varied would become his production that Alfred Barr would describe him as "A one man laboratory for the discovery of new form" (in ibid., p. 7).
Arp rooted his creative activity in principles of ceaseless metamorphosis that echo the generative and evolutionary processes of nature itself. The rounded organic forms often exhibit an impression of swelling and amplification, suggestive of an inner energy. In the present sculpture, the artist has interpreted the theme of the human form depicted in the state of sleep and, as the work’s title suggests, has sought to explore a moment of discord: within the form we witness at the same moment a sense of repose, whilst also observing it writhe and twist. As such, Sommeil tourmenté subscribes entirely to Arp’s interest in the metaphysical and his wish to transcribe the preternatural mystery of the human form as an archetype of Nature.
