At the end of the 19th century, Félix Vallotton largely stopped working on the art of graphic printing, with the exception of this last series L'Exposition Universelle. He returned to this creative process only much later and then only very briefly for the purpose of documenting the First World War. This series, made up of six woodcuts that were created in Paris for the 1900 Paris Exposition, captures some of the exhibition’s most notable events. One of these six prints depicts René Lalique’s (1860-1945) well-known window ‘La Vitrine de Lalique‘ in which the French decorator and goldsmith displayed his latest creations, inspired by French and Japanese symbolism. With all of its six leaves intact, this work is complete, making it a very valuable piece. One edition of this series is to be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
