Dovima with Elephants de Richard Avedon est un cocktail visuel d’extravagance théâtrale, de panache époustouflant et d’élégance parfaite au service de la haute couture. Il a été pris l’apogée de la créativité du photographe et à un moment charnière de sa carrière. Les années que Richard Avedon a consacré à la photographie de mode à Paris, à saisir toute la grandeur d’une industrie de la couture renaissante, ont rendu un second souffle au genre saison après saison et créé une vision fabuleuse et romantique de la Ville Lumière pour son public américain. Sous son objectif, Paris se dévoile comme une fiction séduisante, brillant mélange de nostalgie et d’optimisme joyeux. En l’espace d’un an, ce concept allait inspirer l’histoire d’une délicieuse romance cinématographique, Drôle de frimousse, avec pour personnage central un photographe de mode américain, Dick Avery – inspiré d’Avedon, par ailleurs conseiller pour la production –, et la participation de Dovima. Le créateur d’une mythologie picturale de la mode était lui-même devenu une figure publique dans le rôle qu’il avait si efficacement glorifié.
Dovima with Elephants a judicieusement servi d’illustration à l’affiche de l’exposition phare consacrée au travail d’Avedon sur la mode au Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York, en 1978. Aucun survol de l’histoire de la photographie de mode ne serait complet sans référence à cette composition emblématique. L’image se démarque à plus d’un titre. Elle est le témoignage par excellence de la capacité d’Avedon à créer des clichés de mode vecteurs de l’énergie du mouvement. Certes, le moment est figé, mais l’image dégage du dynamisme et le photographe s’envisage alors comme un chorégraphe, le modèle comme un artiste en représentation exécutant une performance. N’oublions pas non plus le contexte de l’après-guerre, ni les « figures de l’ombre » qui ont guidé le jeune et talentueux Avedon à cet apogée – particulièrement Carmel Snow et Alexey Brodovitch, respectivement rédactrice en chef et directeur artistique de Harper’s Bazaar.
