La mer, le ciel – toujours présent, en constante évolution – ont, à travers les siècles, attirés les artistes qui cherchaient à capturer les qualités de la lumière, du mouvement et de la matérialité insaisissable de ces éléments. Certains artistes célèbres sont parvenus à dépasser l’aspect descriptif ou narratif pour trouver une autre dimension, transformant la représentation picturale de l’eau et de l’air, de la mer et du ciel, en des métaphores, pour atteindre poésie et métaphysique.
Pensez à Turner, unique en son genre dans la longue histoire et tradition de la peinture, Turner qui créa des toiles impressionnantes, s’appuyant sur l’observation mais doté d’un pouvoir émotionnel et d’une puissance expressive, qui transcendent la simple représentation. The sea, the sky – ever present, ever changing – have, through the centuries, attracted artists seeking to capture the qualities of light, movement, and elusive materiality of these elemental subjects. Certain notable artists have very successfully pushed the descriptive or narrative to another level, transforming the pictorial representation of water and air, sea and sky into metaphors, reaching for the poetic and the metaphysical.
Think of Turner, in a class of his own within the long story of history and genre painting, Turner who created awe-inspiring canvases, based on very close observation, yet invested with an emotive power and expressiveness that transcends the descriptive. And think of certain French Impressionists who deconstructed sea and sky into an inspiring, evocative language of pure light and colour.
With the invention of photography in 1839, French artist Paul Delaroche famously suggested that 'From today, painting is dead'. But the story was not so simple, painting was far from dead, and photography had much to learn. Sea and sky have, since the earliest days of photography, represented an irresistible yet daunting challenge as, in those early days, technical shortcomings necessitated long exposures and made it impossible to faithfully record a full spectrum and tonal range. At a time when photographers were at once taking inspiration from the pictorial conventions of painting and also discovering those qualities and characteristics unique to the new medium, one photographer in particular, the Frenchman Gustave Le Gray, achieved distinction in the mid-1850s, mastering the artistically ambitious capture of sea and sky in a notable series of 'marines'. Others followed, including the British photographers Edward Fox and Colonel Henry Stuart Wortley. At last, the subtleties of the sky and the movements of the sea could be fixed in photographic images of high artistic merit.
Hiroshi Sugimoto has a considerable knowledge of the history of his chosen medium, and of the broader story of image-making. He has, through a long career, distilled the essence of that history into images that bring a philosophical dimension to deceptively straightforward subjects. We are invited to travel beyond the overt subject matter, beyond the technical magic of light and photo-chemistry. His seascapes invite slow, deep contemplation, all the more powerfully in this large format that demands an almost immersive engagement.
