Réalisé en 1988, Sans titre est une oeuvre monumentale représentative des premières peintures sur plomb de Günther Förg. Deux élégantes bandes d’un bleu céruléen profond encadrent un vaste fond de plomb brut, patiné et marqué par une exposition aux éléments atmosphériques. Avec son plan horizontal, rare dans l'oeuvre de Förg, généralement habitée de créations orientées dans le sens vertical, ce fond miroitant évoque un paysage abstrait et tentaculaire. Ses divisions géométriques font apparaître des horizons lointains aux points de rencontre entre terre et mer, entre ciel et terre.
Günther Förg a commencé la peinture sur plomb dans les années 1980. Il s’agit de l’un des éléments majeurs de son oeuvre, qui témoigne avec force d'une compréhension rigoureuse des principes historiques du modernisme et de l’expressionnisme abstrait, tout en laissant transparaître une pensée en tout point avant-gardiste. Cette remarquable série introduit de façon radicale le plomb dans l'utilisation qu'elle fait du color-field painting et de la planéité qui le caractérise pour créer un territoire architectural totalement inédit pour ce médium. La présence du plomb remet en question la distinction fondamentale entre oeuvre d’art et objet. « J’apprécie beaucoup les qualités du plomb – sa surface, sa pesanteur », explique-t-il, « il donne à la couleur une densité et un poids différents... Avec les toiles normales, il faut souvent tuer le fond, lui donner une chose contre laquelle il devra réagir. Tandis qu’avec le métal, on a déjà quelque chose – il est rugueux, marqué » (traduction d’une citation de G. Förg, dans D. Ryan, Talking Painting, Karlsruhe, 1997). Naturellement oxydé par les éléments, le plomb génère ses propres dimensions abstraites. Il est marbré de motifs irisés qui agissent en contrepoint hypnotique à la rigueur des bandes de peinture. Versatile et imprévisible, le médium occupe une position centrale dans la mission artistique de Förg, qui est de réhabiliter l’abstraction en tant que moyen d'interroger la forme et le matériau dans leurs états les plus purs et les plus primaires.

Ces oeuvres ont beau rappeler les zips de Barnett Newman et les color-fields frémissants de Mark Rothko, elles ont été conçues en opposition aux revendications spirituelles de l’expressionnisme abstrait américain. « Dans leurs oeuvres, Newman et Rothko ont tenté de réhabiliter une unité et un ordre qui avait, selon eux, été perdu », explique l’artiste. « Pour moi, l’art abstrait d’aujourd’hui est ce que l’on voit, et rien de plus » (traduction d’une citation de G. Förg, dans Günther Förg: Painting / Sculpture / Installation, cat. de l'exp. Newport Beach, 1989, p. 6). Dans le dialogue critique qu'il engage avec ses prédécesseurs modernistes, Förg oscille entre appropriation et hommage. Il libère l’abstraction de son bagage historique, ce qui lui permet de reconfigurer le plan pictural de Sans titre pour en faire une zone d’expression matérielle libre et sans entraves.
Executed in 1988, Günther Förg’s Untitled is a monumental example of the artist’s early lead paintings. Two elegant bands of deep cerulean blue bracket a vast field of naked lead, weathered and scarred by atmospheric exposure. With its horizontal orientation – rare in comparison to the vertical works that populate Förg’s oeuvre – its shimmering ground evokes a sprawling abstract landscape. Its geometric planar divisions conjure distant horizons: the meeting points between sea and land, earth and sky.
Initiated in the 1980s, Förg’s lead paintings represent the most important strand of his practice and powerfully convey a rigorous understanding of the art historical tenets of Modernism and Abstract Expressionism, whilst simultaneously appearing utterly forward-thinking. This standout series calls upon the authentic planarity of colour field painting whilst establishing an altogether new architectural territory for the medium by introducing lead as a radical new ground. This material fundamentally challenges the boundaries between artwork and object. ‘I like very much the qualities of lead – the surface, the heaviness,’ he explains; ‘it gives the colour a different density and weight ... with the normal canvas you often have to kill the ground, give it something to react against. With the metals you already have something - its scratches, scrapes’ (G. Förg, quoted in D. Ryan, Talking Painting, Karlsruhe 1997). Oxidized naturally by the elements, the lead generates its own abstract depths, streaked with iridescent patterns that operate in mesmeric counterpoint to the rigid strips of paint. Volatile and unpredictable, the medium occupies a central position within Förg’s artistic mission: namely, to rehabilitate abstraction as a means of interrogating form and material in their most pure and primal states.
Despite their transcendental allusions to the natural world, works such as Untitled ultimately stand apart from metaphysical concerns. Though reminiscent of Barnett Newman’s ‘zips’ and Mark Rothko’s quivering colour fields, these works were conceived in opposition to the spiritual claims of American Abstract Expressionism. ‘Newman and Rothko attempted to rehabilitate in their works a unity and an order that for them had been lost’, the artist has explained. ‘For me, abstract art today is what one sees and nothing more’ (G. Förg, quoted in Günther Förg: Painting / Sculpture / Installation, exh. cat. Newport Beach, 1989, p. 6). Operating in critical dialogue with his modernist forebears, Förg oscillates between appropriation and homage and frees abstraction from its historical baggage, reconfiguring the picture plane of Untitled as a liberated zone of unfettered material expression.
