Isidro Hernández Gutiérrez, conservateur de la Collection Óscar Domínguez, Tenerife, et la Comisión Consultiva de Expertos y en Defensa de la Obra de Óscar Domínguez (CEDOOC), ont confrmé l’authenticité de cette œuvre.
"Cézanne, qui était influencé par la nature, découvrit la pomme et s’écria en finissant sa toile: «La peinture n’est pas un hippopotame, HéLAS !» A chacun de croire si c’était vrai.
Trois cent mille pommes furent peintes en l’espace de dix ans. Une fois de plus, c’était le triomphe de la pomme sur l’homme.
L’époque actuelle tend vers l’hippopotame. Et le jour où Picasso en peindra un, la peinture sera hippopotame et trois cent mille hippopotames couvriront les murs de la génération à venir."
