Jean-Claude Brugnot

Ancien ferrailleur reconverti en grand marchand d’art, Jean-Claude Brugnot sillonne les routes lorraines dans les années 60 pour sortir de l’oubli les trésors de l’Ecole de Nancy, qu’il contribue à remettre à la mode. Puis, grand précurseur - tout comme Alain Lesieutre et Bob Walker - son intérêt se tourne vers les grands maîtres de l’Art Déco, avant même que la vente de la collection de Jacques Doucet ne consacre la résurgence du style en 1972. Il assemble alors une fabuleuse collection, dispersée en 1993, où se côtoient tout aussi bien les chefs d’oeuvres de Majorelle que ceux de Chareau, tel que le meuble à journaux que nous présentons ici.

Originally a salvage dealer who matured to be one of the great art dealers, Jean-Claude Brugnot scoured Lorraine during the 1960s to discover and to reveal to a new audience the great treasures of the Ecole de Nancy. Even before other fellow visionary collectors and dealers, his attentions were to swiftly refocus to appreciate the great masters of the Art Deco period, anticipating the international trend that followed in the wake of the sale of the collection of Jacques Doucet in 1972. The personal collection that he assembled and that was sold in 1993, included the present lot alongside other masterpieces that traced a narrative of excellence from Louis Majorelle to Pierre Chareau.
