“Tutte le sensazioni prendendo forma plasticamente, si concretizzano ne la sensazione luce, e perciò non possono essere espresse che da tutti i colori del prisma. Dipingere e modellare delle forme altrimenti che con tutti i colori spettrali significherebbe arrestare uno dei moti più importanti della materia e cioè quello di irradiazione. L’espressione colorata della sensazione Luce, in accordo con la nostra espansione sferica dello spazio non può che essere centrifuga o centripeda [sic] in rapporto alla costruzione organica dell’opera”.
“All sensations, when they take artistic form, become immersed in the sensation light, and therefore can only be expressed with all the colours of the prism. Painting and modelling forms, other than with the entire spectrum of colours, would mean suppressing one of the sources of life in the object, that of irradiation. The coloured expression of the sensation Light, in accordance with our spherical expansion in space, can only be centrifugal or centripedal [sic] with relation to the organic structure of the work”.

Arlequin (Danseuse) fu dipinto nel 1962 e proviene dalla collezione privata di Alain Delon; con i suoi movimenti drammaticamente dinamici, tipici di una figura danzante, rappresenta uno dei principali soggetti che contrassegnarono la carriera di Gino Severini. Eseguito con una gamma di colori abbaglianti, il lavoro cattura il movimento frenetico e i ritmi del danzatore attraverso una serie di forme geometriche, intrecciate e astratte. Il ballo aveva ispirato Severini durante i suoi primi anni a Parigi, dove aveva sperimentato in prima persona l'atmosfera inebriante della cultura della danza che l'artista esperiva nei caffè, nelle sale da ballo e nei locali notturni della vivace metropoli. Attraverso queste esperienze egli comprese che il dinamismo e l'energia che caratterizzavano il mondo moderno non erano connessi solo alle innovazioni tecnologiche e alle macchine, ma potevano essere individuati anche osservando i gesti frenetici del corpo umano in movimento. Il tema della danza riemerse nei dipinti di Severini degli anni '50, che costituirono un momento di intensa riflessione per l'artista tanto che si concentrò, ancora una volta, su molti dei soggetti e delle tecniche futuriste che avevano caratterizzato i suoi lavori precedenti.
In Arlequin (Danseuse), Severini raffigura l'arlecchino danzante in modo estremamente astratto, riducendo la sua silhouette in frammenti attraverso una molteplicità di forme geometriche dai colori vibranti che dal centro della tela si irradiano verso l'esterno. La tavolozza dai colori vivaci e luminosi rischiara l'intera superficie dell'immagine, e le sfaccettature di toni scarlatti e neri ricordano in modo evidente il costume iconico e vibrante dell'arlecchino. I discontinui punti che riempiono la tela evocano una luminosità intensa, e donano alla composizione un effetto effervescente, frizzante, dando luogo alla percezione che forme differenti stanno vibrando sotto le luci elettriche del palco.
Originating from the private collection of Monsieur Alain Delon, the Arlequin (Danseuse) was painted in 1962 and depicts one of the key motifs which occupied Gino Severini across his career: the dramatically dynamic movements of a dancing figure. Executed in a dazzling array of colours, the painting captures a sense of the frenzied movement and rhythms of the dancer through a series of interlocking, abstract forms. Dance had originally inspired Severini during his early years in Paris, with the artist experiencing first-hand the heady atmosphere of the city’s dance culture, played out across the cafés, dancehalls and nightclubs of the buzzing metropolis. Through these experiences the artist came to realise that the dynamism and energy of the modern world could be found not only in the innovations of technology and machines, but also in the frenetic actions of the human body in motion. The theme of dance re-emerged in Severini’s paintings during the 1950s, during a period of intense reflection for the artist, as he focused once again on many of the Futurist techniques and subjects which had characterised his earlier work.
In Arlequin (Danseuse), Severini depicts the figure of the dancing harlequin in a highly abstract manner, fracturing its silhouette into a series of vibrantly coloured geometric shapes that radiate outwards from the centre of the canvas. The effusive, bright colour palette enlivens the entire pictorial surface, with facets of scarlet and black evoking the harlequin’s iconic, vibrant costume to powerful effect. The staccato dots that saturate the canvas conjure an intense luminosity, infusing the composition with an effervescent, sparkling feel, creating the sensation that the different forms are vibrating under the electric lights of the stage.
