"C'est en allant à New York avec Baudoin Lebon que j'ai fait la connaissance de Leo Castelli.
II avait une exposition de Claes Oldenburg. Tout de suite nous avons sympathisé, il faut dire qu'il était curieux de tout et des êtres. Pour le trentième anniversaire de sa galerie, il avait fait un accrochage de tous ses artistes dans un espace à Soho. II m'a conseillé d'aller voir. Je ne connaissais rien de la peinture américaine mais j'étais curieux. Ce que j'ai vu m'a stupéfié: la balle de base-ball d'Oldenburg, la tête de chèvre dans un tableau de Rauschenberg, les néons de Flavin, une vidéo de Bruce Nauman. Sur le moment j'ai été déçu, je me suis dit que je ne comprendrais jamais rien à cet art. Par la suite, je me suis mis à apprécier, à mieux connaitre, même si mon gout est resté plus européen à quelques exceptions près. J'ai acheté à Leo plusieurs Flavin, dont un Monument pour Tatlin, merveilleux, des dessins de Bruce Nauman."
"It was by going to New York with Baudoin Lebon that I met Leo Castelli. He was staging a Claes Oldenburg exhibition. We got on straight away; he was curious about everything and everybody. For the 30th anniversary of his gallery, he held a group exhibition featuring all his artists in his space in Soho. He suggested I come and see it. I didn't know anything about American painting but I was curious. What I saw astonished me: Oldenburg's baseball, the goat's head in a Rauschenberg painting, Flavin's neons, a video by Bruce Nauman. At the time I was disappointed: I thought I would never understand this kind of art. Subsequently, I started to appreciate it, to know it better, even though my taste remains more European, with a few exceptions. From Leo I purchased several Flavins, including a magnificent Monument for Tatlin and some Bruce Nauman drawings."
