L’œuvre Embroidery faisait partie de l’exposition « Intolerance » qui s’est tenue à la galerie Zeno X d’Anvers en 1993. Huit peintures étaient exposées, dont trois constituaient le cœur de l’exposition. Embroidery venait en écho à ces trois œuvres. La première des trois peintures, intitulée Intolerance, représentait des chandeliers qui appartenaient à ma mère. La deuxième se composait d’assiettes émaillées, suspendues au mur d’une cheminée. Dans la troisième toile, des fleurs, dont on ne voyait que les tiges, étaient placées dans un vase en céramique ; la lumière se réfléchissait sur la surface émaillée du vase.
Ces trois peintures étaient exposées dans la deuxième salle. Elles étaient accrochées au-dessus de trois cheminées. Il était question d’évoquer la vie de famille, mais également d’établir un lien singulier entre la cheminée d’une maison et l’autel d’une église. Les gens accrochent souvent à cet endroit des objets qui leur tiennent à cœur, comme des photos de famille…
C’est là que la dimension religieuse est entrée en jeu. Alors que je cherchais des objets similaires aux chandeliers, je suis tombé sur une chape brodée. J’ai recadré l’image afin de mettre l’accent sur l’étoffe chatoyante, en réduisant les croix brodées et en les insérant dans une répétition de formes circulaires. Ce qui a fait surgir l’idée de décoration ou de papier peint. Embroidery n’est pas la première de mes œuvres à traduire ma fascination pour les tissus ou les textures. La première date de 1990 et s’intitule Sheer Curtains. Les rideaux sont ornés d’un motif floral. La même année, j’ai peint Embitterment, un triptyque vertical qui figure ma hauteur. Cette œuvre naissait encore d’images de fleurs cousues, mais cette fois-ci, aplaties. Embroidery est également le titre d’une œuvre que j’ai peinte en 1999, dans le cadre de l’exposition « Passion ». Cette exposition reposait sur les images d’un Jeu de la Passion auquel j’avais assisté quand j’étais enfant, en 1974, dans le village allemand d’Oberammergau. L’idée d’un tricot artisanal, très élaboré, m’a toujours fasciné en raison de sa linéarité. Sa ressemblance avec la langue et l’écriture s’est transformée en un motif visuel. La toile Embroidery n’a pas de limite. On dirait que l’image pourrait facilement se prolonger dans l’espace. Sur le plan religieux, le vert symbolise l’espoir. Cette couleur a été délibérément choisie car elle évoque l’espérance de façon prophétique, bien que clairement ambiguë. Inutile de préciser que tout ceci est le fruit d’une certaine ironie.

The work “Embroidery” was part of a show at the Zenox Gallery in Antwerp titled Intolerance in 1993. The show consisted of eight paintings of which three were the core. To which the embroidery was the counterpart. The first of the three paintings is titled “Intolerance” depicting candleholders belonging to my mother. The second was a painting of glazed plates hanging on a chimney wall. The third was a cropped image of flowers only showing their stems held by a ceramic vase emphasizing the light that falls on the glazed surface of the vase.
In the show these three paintings were shown in the second space and all where hung above the three chimneys, this to amplify the idea of domesticity but as in a weird way making a connection between a mantelpiece and an altar. People tend to display things on it that are dear to them photo’s of their beloved family etc.
It is here that the idea of religion came into the game. I started looking for objects similar to the candleholders but instead stumbled on an embroidered priest cloak. I cropped it in a sense that it highlighted it shimmering fabric reducing the crosses embedded within a repetition of circular forms. Which propelled the idea of decoration or wallpaper. Embroidery was not the first work that dealt with my fascination for fabric or texture. The first one was “Sheer Curtains” of 1990. Curtains that had a stitched flower motive on them. The second of the same year titled embitterment. Was a vertically lined up triptych portraying my height. Again derived from imagery from stitched on flowers but this time flattened. Embroidery was also not the last painting another one with the same exact title was made in 1999 as an addition to the passion paintings a show based on images of the passion play I witnessed as a kid in 1974 in Oberammergau, Germany. The idea of knitted highly elaborate hand crafted fabric has always fascinated me because of its linearity and its resemblance to language and writing turned into a visual pattern. The painting embroidery has no borders. It seems as if the image could easily expand into space. The colour green in religious terms means hope and was purposely chosen because of its prophetic although clearly ambiguous sense of expectation. No need to explain that all this was conceived out of a clear sense of irony.
