Realizzato nel 1958, Danseuse dans la lumière riprende uno dei temi centrali della produzione artistica di Severini: il movimento drammatico e dinamico della figura danzante. In un miriade di colori brillanti, il quadro coglie la sensazione del movimento e dei ritmi frenetici della ballerina attraverso una serie di forme geometriche incastrate ed astratte. Durante la giovinezza trascorsa a Parigi, l'artista ha sperimentato in prima persona l'atmosfera inebriante del mondo della danza, nei caff, nelle sale da ballo e nei cabaret della citt piena di vita. Attraverso queste esperienze, Severini si è reso conto che il dinamismo e l'energia del mondo moderno si manifestavano non solo nelle innovazioni tecnologiche e meccaniche, ma anche nelle evoluzioni frenetiche del corpo umano in movimento, impegnato nelle nuove danze allora alla moda come il Tango argentino, il Pan-Pan, e la Danza dell'Orso. Il tema del ballo è riemerso nella pittura di Severini negli anni Cinquanta, un periodo di intensa riflessione per l'artista, che ha rivisitato le tecniche e i temi futuristi della giovinezza. Uno degli aspetti più straordinari della Danseuse dans la lumière è l'uso che il pittore fa di una tecnica, simile a quella del mosaico, che satura la tela di puntini vivacemente colorati. Grazie a quella tecnica i colori si caricano di luminosità, intensificando l'impressione delle luci elettriche scintillanti che illuminano la ballerina sul palcoscenico. Un procedimento che derivava dall'arte dei neo-impressionisti, e in particolare dalle tecniche divisioniste di Georges Seurat, che Severini riteneva adatte a rappresentare la sensazione astratta del movimento in modo nuovo e innovativo. Painted in 1958, Danseuse dans la lumiere depicts one of the key motifs which occupied Gino Severini across his career: the dramatically dynamic movements of the dancing figure. Executed in a dazzling array of colours, the painting captures a sense of the frenzied movement and rhythms of the dancer through a series of geometric, interlocking, abstract forms. Dance had originally inspired Severini during his early years in Paris, with the artist experiencing first-hand the heady atmosphere of the city's dance culture, played out across the cafs, dancehalls and nightclubs of the buzzing metropolis. Through these experiences the artist came to realise that the dynamism and energy of the modern could be found not only in the innovations of technology and machines, but also in the frenetic actions of the human body in motion, as it participated in new dance crazes such as the Argentine Tango, the Pan-Pan and the Bear Dance. The theme of dance re-emerged in Severini's paintings during the 1950s, at a time of intense reflection for the artist, as he focused once again on many of the Futurist techniques and subjects which had characterised his earlier work. Inspired by his own daughter's studies of classical ballet, Severini moved away from the fashionable dances he had previously depicted and instead began to illustrate the timelessly elegant pirouettes and arabesques of the ballerina as she twirls beneath the electric lights of the stage.

Through this dematerialization of form, Severini aimed to create a visual representation of the energy of the performance, moving beyond a literal representation of the dancer herself and instead focusing on the sensory impressions generated by her movements. In this way, Severini hopes to convey the very essence of the intricate rhythms, impulses and movements of her body as it responds to the music. The shapes are arranged in a complex assemblage of interpenetrating volumes and lines, each filled by a detailed pattern of highly pigmented dots. The effusive, bright colour palette used by Severini enlivens the entire picture surface, and captures a sense of the joyful energy that emanates from the dancer during her performance.
