En 1989, Bernard Bufet entreprend de représenter les monuments les plus emblématiques de Paris et ses environs. Alors que la Tour Eiffel et le Grand Palais exaltent la ville lumière, il émane du Château de Versailles une monumentalité remarquable, soulignée par le très grand format choisi par le peintre.
L’édifice, qui incarne toute la grandeur de l’architecture classique du XVIIe siècle, est ici considérablement métamorphosé par la touche de l’artiste. La pureté des lignes et la symétrie du château sont envisagées sous le trait noir, épais et dominant si caractéristique de l’oeuvre de Bufet. Le peintre renforce ainsi le majestueux du bâtiment par l’utilisation de lignes verticales et horizontales fortes, qui se refètent de manière délicate et harmonieuse dans le parterre d’eau du château.
Au premier plan de l’oeuvre, Bufet détourne par ailleurs l’une des statues évoquant les Fleuves. Si ces allégories en bronze sont d’ordinaire conçues selon le canon statuaire grec, l’artiste représente ici un personnage émacié, sous un ciel gris, plus à même de faire écho à ses propres angoisses et tourments.
In 1989 Bernard Bufet undertook the representation of several of the most emblematic buildings of Paris and its environs. Whereas the Eiffel Tower and the Grand Palais were chosen to represent the City if Light, Versailles evoked the monumentality of history, and hence the oversized format chosen by the artist for the present work.
The palace, which embodies the golden age of 17th century French architecture, is here completely transformed by Buffet’s style. The lightness and symmetry characteristic of the building’s facade are reconsidered with dark, thick strokes which dominate the construction. A such the painter succeeds in reinforcing the majestic aspect of the edifice through the presence if these strong vertical and horizontal lines which harmoniously
reflect in the water feature in the foreground.
Buffet had in fact altered one of the aspects of the statue representative of the Rivers. Indeed these allegorical figures were originally conceived according to the Classical Greek canon, whereas in Buffet’s version the figure appears tormented under a threatening sky, reflecting no doubt the artist’s own sense of melancholy.
