En 1998, le Time magazine cite Le Corbusier parmi les vingt personnalités les plus influentes de l’art moderne. Mais si la reconnaissance critique et commerciale honore son travail d’architecte dès les débuts de sa carrière - ses projets d’urbanisme dans le monde entier lui assurant une renommée durable - ce n’est que tardivement qu’il est salué en tant que peintre. Cela est en partie dû au refus de l’artiste lui-même d’exposer sa peinture, en dépit du fait qu’il travaille en deux dimensions depuis ses débuts, comme le soulignent Naïma et Jean-Pierre Jornod dans leur introduction au catalogue raisonné. Il pratique notamment le dessin avec ardeur dès l’âge de cinq ans, et tout au long de sa vie. Beginning in 1918 and for a period of seven years both artists, initially also working with Fernand Léger, had developed a highly theoretical approach to painting based on a belief that Cubism had become corrupted, straying from the initial pure intentions of its founding principles. The rupture with Ozenfant in 1925 had been bitter, fueled by a heated exchange of correspondence between the two artists. In the period of “mourning” - as Le Corbusier himself termed it (ibid., p. 1028) – which followed, he set out to shape his own individual visual style. Freed from the rigidity of the Purist canon, Le Corbusier could now explore the joy of painting. Trois Bouteilles (Bleu) is a key work in Le Corbusier’s progressive approach, displaying a characteristic focus on meticulousness but combined here with a strong urge towards personalization. Still life remained the artist’s particular domain of predilection and, as was the case with all of his major paintings, Trois Bouteilles (Bleu) was the final accomplishment in a lengthy process of thought and investigation as to the selection of elements and their compositional organisation. Closely related to the preceding works from 1927 and 1928 in terms of the subject matter, the present work nevertheless takes a step forwards with the inclusion of elements of found objects, depicted in the upper left quadrant, which intimate the direction in which Le Corbusier would take his painting with his exploration of Objets à reaction poétique. Beyond the compositional and formal qualities of the present work, it is the strong use of colour in Trois Bouteilles (Bleu) which further underscores its distinctiveness. Le Corbusier attached a particular significance to the selection of colour in order to establish the emotional quality of his work. Indicative of mood, emotion and a state of being, colour was the mechanism which allowed the artist’s true expression to surface, as the artist himself recalled via this anecdote: “Fernand Léger spends his Sundays here. He is solid, strong, healthy, subtle, true. He is taken aback by the turbulence, the explosiveness and the violence of my paintings. Naturally, I explode there because everywhere else I must keep my fist in my pocket.” (ibid., p. 265). Le Corbusier considered his works from 1928 as particularly accomplished from the point of view of his use of colour. As he wrote to his mother, “This time my painting is doing well. I’ve found the thing about colour itself. It’s been 10 years that I’ve been searching for it” (letter to his mother, 20 January 1928, cited in ibid., p. 264). The artist’s use of blue, central to this composition and as stated in the work’s title, held a specific meaning for the artist: that of space. Specifically, blue evoked for Le Corbusier mysterious depths, as embodied by the lake next to which he had grown up with his family. It was to this place that he would return in 1926 to witness the passing of his father in a cabin specifically designed by Le Corbusier with views onto the water and the hazy mountains beyond. Around the time that Trois Bouteilles (bleu) was executed, Charles Edouard Jeanneret made the decision to adopt the name of Le Corbusier, a diminutive of his maternal family’s name “Corbésier” as well as a reference to the native Americans’ use of the crow (“le corbu”) in their totems. Armed with his new identity, Le Corbusier had begun a period of unprecedented freedom and discovery in his painted oeuvre .
