In 1939, unable remain inactive during the war, Le Corbusier took refuge at Vezelay, during which time he would experiment with different techniques In his painting. Principally known for his works as an architect, Corbusier also constantly painted, noting: "It is through practicing the plastic arts that I am intellectually stimulated in my urbanism, and in my architecture" (quoted in Le Corbusier (1887-1965): 40 ans de peinture, exhibition catalogue, Galerie Zlotowski, Paris, 2001). He fitted out a studio in his hotel room to devote himself to his painting and drawings. "Fantastic result! I am thoroughly enjoying painting, if it were up to me I would paint a whole series" (cited in N. and J.P. Jornod, Le Corbusier, Catalogue Raisonn/ae de l'uvre peint, Milan, 2005, vol. I, p. 162). Powerless in the face of the ongoing conflict, Le Corbusier found refuge in his creativity: "I paint with huge amounts of tenacity and passion" (cited in J. Jenger, Le Corbusier, Choix de Lettres, Basel, 2001) and this watercolour is the very result of this contemplation of the plastic arts.%
