"We must forget exterior reality, and our knowledge of it to create the new dimensions," Severini declared, "the order and extent of which will be discovered in our artistic sensibility in relation to the world of plastic creation" (in 'The Plastic Analogies of Dynamism-Futurist Manifesto 1913,' U. Apollonio, ed., Futurist Manifestos, Boston, 2001, p. 118). The drawing La modiste is a revealing window into the process by which Gino Severini transformed "exterior reality" using the precepts that he and his colleagues in la bandiera futurista had developed as they examined the society of their time, which they perceived to be an "epoch of dynamism and simultaneity" (ibid., p. 121).
Drawn in 1915 - the current year now marking the centennial of its creation - La modiste reflects aspects of the transcendent futurist style, virtually abstract, which Severini achieved before the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914. At the same time, by re-introducing one of his pre-war belle époque subjects, likely a response to the tragedy of the conflict and in contrast to his cold steel treatment of such military themes as the famous Train blindé en action (Fonti, no. 242; The Museum of Modern Art, New York), Severini was about to move into a cubist phase, more in the manner of Picasso, Gris and other painters in Paris during the war.
Severini had been straddling the two rival camps of Parisian Cubism and Italian Futurism since the emergence of both movements in 1910-11. Having arrived in Paris during the fall of 1906, at the age of 23, he knew nearly everyone of importance on the cutting edge of the new art, whether in Milan or Paris. In 1910 Severini was a signatory to both the Manifesto of the Futurist Painters and the Futurist Painting: Technical Manifesto, key documents which also bore the names of Balla, Boccioni, Carrà and Russolo. He became friendly with both founding fathers of Cubism - Braque initially, then Picasso - and through them the leading writer on modernism in Paris, the poet and journalist Apollinaire. Severini was adept at articulating the aims and means of each side to the other, while drawing key lessons from both movements toward the development of his own work. Among all the avant-garde artists at that time who called themselves either cubists or futurists, each faction often denigrating and even dismissing the other, Severini alone was magnanimously bipartisan in his outlook and affinities.
The subject of une modiste, a milliner, first appeared in Severini's work during 1911 (Fonti, no. 95), just as he was embarking on his series of female dancers, that phenomenon of modern cosmopolitan life which in his view most excitingly embodied the changing social dynamics of the era, combining contemporary style with public entertainment, while manifesting that essential component the futurists most eagerly sought to depict in their work - motion. And to this scene of night clubs and dance halls, the work of the milliner is indispensable: fashion-conscious and well-heeled women dared not be seen in public without the advantage of a showy hat. Severini featured such accessories in numerous portrait and figure paintings during the pre-war period. He may have even considered that the visual artist and the modiste were in their professions cut from the same cloth, as it were, insofar as each is engaged in the designing, shaping and assembling of color forms to create a desired effect.
The drawing La modiste is the outcome of a transformative phase, which commenced during 1913, as Severini moved from a style previously inflected with the dense faceting of Parisian Cubism - as evident in his carnivalesque Geroglifico Dinamico del Bal Tabarin, 1912 (Fonti, no. 107; The Museum of Modern Art, New York) - to a more freely expansive synthesis, more resolutely futurist, in which rhythmic forms appear to unfold and open out from the central axis of the figure. Here, as in his dancers, Severini has pared down his subject, eliminating most details, until only the most essential active forms remained, ostensibly approaching abstraction, which the artist termed his "plastic analogies of dynamism." In the catalogue introduction to his 1913 exhibition at Marlborough Gallery, London, the artist explained: "An overpowering need for abstraction has driven me to put on one side all realization of mass and of form in the sense of pictorial relief. Each drawing is an objective study, an effort in the direction of synthesis and the absolute" (quoted in J.C. Taylor, Futurism, exhibition catalogue, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1961, p. 69).
The repetition of elements imbues La modiste with movement, especially in the milliner's arms and hands, the step-wise unfolding of the material she is manipulating, generating rhythms within the composition which Severini further emphasized in the fan-like spread of the pleats in her dress. The broken, descending curvilinear forms that press in from both sides of the sheet, together with the jutting corner of the table-top, integrate the figure within its spatial environment. Severini stated that one of the formal aims he pursued in his work is "Simultaneous contrast of lines, planes and volumes, and of groups of analogous forms in spherical expansion. Constructive interpenetration" (quoted in U. Apollonio, op. cit., p. 123).
Echoes of this phase would continue to resonate in Severini's work into 1915, including his railway train paintings and other subjects related to l'idee 'guerre'.
