En 1952 Wifredo Lam s'installe définitivement à Paris, mais son travail conserve ses profondes influences héritées de ses racines afro-cubaines et de ses rites ancestraux, redécouverts à Cuba en 1942. Ainsi Si Possible (La Ofrenda), peint en 1955, offre un exemple emblématique de ce monde magique peuplé d'insectes et d'oiseaux qui sont autant d'esprits et de fantmes issus du spiritisme de la santer<->a.
Le début des années 1950 marque également un tournant dans l'évolution du style picturale de Lam, qui devient plus géométrique et restreint. Ainsi les figures allongées et aplaties de Si Possible n'apparaissent plus sur des fonds végétaux empruntés à une jungle sauvage - l'un des thèmes récurrents des années 1940 - mais semblent ici flotter dans un espace abstrait. La palette réduite de multiples nuances de gris-marron, sans doute héritée de la peinture classique espagnole, les lignes brisées et le graphisme acéré témoignent de cette transformation envotante du monde terrestre vers un univers mystérieux et divin.
Sur le premier plan, devant un personnage iconique de femme-cheval et un oiseau aux lignes anguleuses, voltige une chauve-souris, sans doute une référence à un épisode de l'enfance de Lam quand il a rencontré le spectre de la chauve-souris dans l'obscurité de sa chambre, expérience qui a été pour lui son premier éveil aux multiples dimensions de l'existence. Ainsi dans cette composition chargée d'émotion, Lam parvient à mettre en scène un rite de sacrifice aux divinités africaines, illustrant parfaitement le pouvoir de ses oeuvres de stimuler les esprits et d'émouvoir les âmes.
Wifredo Lam moved to Paris permanently in 1952, although his work retained profound influences inherited from his Afro-Cuban roots and ancestral traditions rediscovered in Cuba in 1942. Si Possible (La Ofrenda), painted in 1955, provides an outstanding example of this magical world inhabited by insects and birds evoking the spirits and ghosts of Santeran spiritualism.
The early 1950s also marked a turning point in the development of Lam's pictorial style, which became more geometric and restrained. The elongated and flattened figures of Si Possible, for instance, no longer appear on backgrounds of jungle flora - one of the recurrent themes of the 1940s - but appear here to float in an abstract space. The limited palette of multiple shades of grey and brown, no doubt inherited from classical Spanish painting, the dotted lines and sharp graphical style testify to this captivating transformation from the earthly world to a mysterious and divine plain.
In the foreground, before an iconic figure of a half-woman half-horse and a bird with angular lines, flutters a bat, undoubtedly a reference to an episode in Lam's childhood when he encountered a bat in the darkness of his bedroom, an experience which gave him his first realisation of the multiple dimensions of existence. In this emotionally-charged composition, Lam therefore manages to capture a sacrificial ritual to the African gods, perfectly illustrating the power of his works to stimulate the spirit and move the soul.
