Balayant de larges coups de pieds sur la vaste surface de la toile, Yagenko joue du contraste entre les tourbillons de couleurs vives du premier-plan - rouge, jaune et bleu prédominent ici, ponctués çà et là de sillons blancs ou roses - et le noir mat de l'arrière-plan, engendrant une profondeur de champ en même temps qu'une vibration qui sont emblématiques de la force des oeuvres réalisées par Shiraga à la charnière des années 1980 et 1990, et qui renouent avec la puissance expressive des tableaux réalisés par l'artiste trente ans plus tôt.
Si la trajectoire de Shiraga éclot dans la quasi autarcie des premières années du groupe Gutaï au Japon, elle s'inscrit néanmoins dans une histoire de l'art qui, dans les années 1950, se caractérise par des échanges accrus entre l'Orient et l'Occident (échanges que des personnalités telles que Michel Tapié ont beaucoup contribué à alimenter) et qui est en particulier marquée par le développement de l'abstraction gestuelle en Europe et en Amérique. Mais tandis que Mathieu conserve ses pinceaux lorsqu'il s'élance face au tableau et que Pollock tourne autour de la toile posée au sol pour y projeter la peinture contenue les pots qu'il agite, Shiraga est quant à lui entièrement dans la peinture, à même la toile et la matière, émancipé de toute forme d'outil et d'intermédiation, 'à l'intérieur du tableau et de façon irrémédiable.' Il n'est plus question d'outillage et d'instruments : le corps de l'artiste est le vecteur unique de son art. Mais, plus encore, Shiraga peint avec les pieds, partie du corps qui échappe intrinsèquement à la maîtrise. Comme le souligne Antoni Tàpies, cette approche a ceci de spécifique qu'elle s'affranchit délibérément de la notion classique de perfection de l'oeuvre et d'habilité de l'artiste. Dans le corps-à-corps que Shiraga mène avec la toile, aucune place pour le calcul : l'oeuvre n'est pas dans le résultat fini d'un acte de création réfléchi et construit, que l'on pourrait juger à l'aune des critères académiques du beau et du laid, mais le témoin de l'étreinte de l'artiste et de la toile, avec ses imperfections plastiques, ses contrastes et mélanges aléatoires de peinture, ses éclaboussures et empâtements de qui ne disent rien d'autre que ceci : ici est passé l'artiste. Sweeping the vast surface of the canvas with broad strokes of the artist's feet, Yagenko plays on the contrasts between the swirls of vibrant colour in the foreground - predominantly red, yellow and blue, punctuated here and there by white and pink furrows - and the matte black of the background, creating depth of field as well as a resonance emblematic of the power of the works produced by Shiraga at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, reminiscent of the expressive power of the paintings produced by the artist 30 years earlier.
Although Shiraga's career began in the near-isolation of the early years of the Gutaï group in Japan, it became part of a chapter in art history which, in the 1950s, saw increasing exchanges between East and West (exchanges which figures such as Michel Tapié contributed significantly to nurturing) and which was particularly marked by the development of action painting in Europe and America. But while Mathieu still used brushes in his paintings and Pollock circled the canvas laid out on the ground to drip paint from the pots he swung around, Shiraga was entirely in the painting, among the canvas and the materials, emancipated from any kind of tool or intermediation, 'inside the painting, in an irremediable way' (Antonio Saura, 'Shiraga ne peint pas avec les pieds', Kazuo Shiraga, exhibition catalogue, Toulouse, Réfectoire des Jacobins, 1993).
All tools and instruments are forgotten - the artist's body is the unique vehicle for his art. But to take it even further, Shiraga paints with his feet, parts of the body which intrinsically avoid control. As highlighted by Antoni Tàpies, this approach is characterised by the fact that it deliberately breaks away from the traditional concept of the work's perfection and the artist's skill. In Shiraga's close combat with the canvas, there is no room for calculation: the work is not the polished result of a considered and constructed act of creation, to be judged according to academic criteria of beauty and ugliness, but a testament to the intimacy between artist and canvas, with its artistic imperfections, its contrasts and random mixes of paint, its spatters and blobs which say nothing other than 'the artist was here'. And it is probably in this respect that Shiraga's art achieves its highest degree of radicalism and anticipation: 'in the climate of perfection and conformist order we enjoy in this sanatorium which is our industrial civilisation, we should be delighted that a Buddhist master - who could equally be a Franciscan - reminds us of the traditional aesthetic of imperfections.'
