Il existait, de part le monde, un lien souterrain, ineffable et spirituel entre quelques collectionneurs, quelques galeries, un musée en France et quatre institutions américaines.
Ces quatre institutions détennaient, en effet, quatre tableaux très particuliers:
- The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo NY (FIRST AVENUE. 1957)
- The Art Institute of Chicago IL (FOURTH AVENUE. 1957)
- The Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburg PA (PAINTING. 1957)

qui font partie d'un ensemble de 14 toiles peintes par Mathieu, sous terre, en trois heures, le mercredi 9 octobre 1957, dans les sous-sols de l'ancien Hôtel Ritz-Carlton, à New York.
Cette histoire étonnante commence le 29 août 1957, lorsque Georges Mathieu arrive au Japon, accueilli à l'aéroport de Tokyo par des membres du groupe Gutaï.
En trois jours, il exécute, devant un public étonné et ravi, 21 toiles et une fresque de quinze mètres de long sur Japon Impérial pour son exposition dans la galerie du Shirokiya et, le 11 septembre, il est à Osaka où il peint 6 autres toiles, en public, pour son exposition dans la galerie du Daïmaru.
Dans la préface du catalogue de la première exposition de l'oeuvre de Nevelson en Europe, à la galerie Daniel Cordier, Paris 1960, Georges Mathieu racontera ses aventures bien différentes au Japon et aux États-Unis :
Je revenais du Japon. J'avais peint dans des garages, dans des écoles, dans la rue et j'avais senti la chaleur des foules fascinées, puis j'avais vu défiler en quatre jours à mon exposition 30.000 âmes simples et j'avais été ému par une véritable volonté de communion. À Osaka, j'avais dû peindre sur le toit d'un building sous un ciel sillonné d'hélicoptères, j'avais dû parler devant 3.000 étudiants anxieux de leur avenir désormais lié aux problèmes de l'Occident.
Et l'on connaît la confidence de l'artiste : Peu ont compris que la peinture faite en public représente pour moi la véritable communion avec les hommes.
Déjà la suite de l'exposition "Véhémences confrontées", à la galerie Nina Dausset, Paris 1951, qui fut la première confrontation des avant-gardes européennes et américaines, Georges Mathieu avait écrit une vibrante "Déclaration aux peintres d'avant-garde américains" (1952) dans laquelle il lançait : Pour la première fois dans l'histoire de la peinture américaine, vous êtes vingt-cinq [Pollock, de Kooning, Reinhardt, Rothko, Still, etc.] qui pouvez revendiquer avoir contribué à la construction d'une tradition. La peinture américaine commence avec vous. Vous êtes parmi ceux qui lancent l'aventure de la peinture d'aujourd'hui dans le monde.
En 1957, il s'agissait pour Mathieu d'affirmer sa peinture et défendre son art. Il était aussi vital pour lui-même, ce faisant, d'affrmer sa raison d'être, de proposer, d'imposer et d'installer son Abstraction Lyrique dont il se fera le promoteur et demeure le hérault, fondée sur les notions de vitesse, de risque, de concentration, en un mot : de spontanéité.
Au lendemain de la mort de James Dean quelque part sur une route de campagne, l'artiste arrive à New York pour l'ouverture de son exposition "Lyrical Abstraction in new paintings by Mathieu", le 1er octobre, à la Kootz Gallery. Il a 36 ans.
Georges Mathieu poursuit ainsi le récit de son aventure :
J'arrive à New York. J'assiste à un cocktail donné en mon honneur : deux cents personnes debout et, qui plus est, debout, dinent. Je réussis à m'asseoir. Dix jours plus tard, mon marchand me demande de lui faire quelques toiles. Le seul endroit qu'il trouve comme atelier est le quatrième sous-sol de l'ancien Hôtel Ritz-Carlton au 400 de Madison Avenue. J'y descends seul, à 45 pieds sous terre, transportant mes couleurs, seul, dans des ascenseurs qu'on dirige seul, pour découvrir au fond de longs couloirs de prison une salle immense où je peins, seul, quatorze toiles en trois heures : expérience la plus kafkaïenne de ma vie - kafkaïenne non pas en raison de ma solitude, mais en raison de ses causes.
Le marchand Samuel Kootz avait prévenu Mathieu que si le public de New York apprenait qu'il avait mis aussi peu de temps à peindre une toile, il ne pourrait jamais en demander le prix qu'il escomptait !
L'une des 14 toiles peintes en trois heures est titrée FOURTH AVENUE.
La toile est carrée ; le fond est peint en rouge, sur lequel le peintre a centré sa composition bâtie à la brosse en bleu. Et la calligraphie apparaît, avec l'emploi des tubes directement sur la toile, d'abord le blanc, puis le bleu. L'écriture fait surgir des sinusoïdes à la manière des traces d'un sismographe enregistrant les secousses telluriques. Enfn, trois taches de bleu, de haut en bas, à la brosse, qui viennent recouvrir une partie des signes et d'autres taches çà et là, dues à la vitesse d'exécution.
Chacune de mes toiles est comparable à un air de jazz ; les formes sont l'expression d'un rythme intérieur très rapide ; tous mes gestes s'enchaînent et je ne peux ni les expliquer ni les modérer. Ils ont pour aboutissement une sorte d'écriture inspirée, réalisée sans aucune préméditation.
À propos des taches dans sa peinture, Mathieu déclarait : Quand vous avez une sculpture mutilée, l'imaginaire remplace aisément et mieux même ce qui manque. Les signes occultés en partie par des taches acquièrent une grandeur nouvelle.
Rentré à Paris, Georges Mathieu reçut une lettre de Kootz : "J'ai trouvé un intérêt si grand aux peintures que vous avez faites ici à New York que je fais quelque chose d'assez exceptionnel et annule la dernière semaine de l'exposition de groupe actuelle et pendant cinq jours - du 5 au 9 novembre - nous montrerons les oeuvres que vous avez faites pendant que vous êtiez ici."
Il existe quelques photographies de Mathieu dans les caves de l'Hôtel Ritz-Carlton, publiées, sans mention particulière, dans les deux derniers ouvrages que l'artiste a consacrés à son oeuvre. Sur l'un des clichés, l'on voit le peintre - après l'acte de peindre, en costume de ville - posant au milieu des 14 peintures disposées certaines verticalement, d'autres à plat sur le sol. FOURTH AVENUE. 1957 est sur le sol, au fond et à gauche, probablement parce qu'elle est l'une des plus chargées en peinture.
C'est peut-être l'occasion de révéler, ici, un témoignage. Un jour, je demandai à Georges Mathieu qui avait pris les photos, dans la cave de New York, alors qu'il avait écrit qu'il y était descendu seul ?
Il répondit : C'est ma femme !
De fait, Adélaïde de Boisserée (1930-2004) réalisera en 1959-1960 plusieurs portraits de Georges Mathieu publiés, sans mention, dans les catalogues de ses expositions particulières à l'étranger. Alors que les tirages destinés à la Presse portent au dos le cachet "Photo Boisserée - mention obligatoire".
Ainsi, le nouveau collectionneur de cette oeuvre partagera, avec certains autres, le lien souterrain, ineffable et spirituel qui le placera au même niveau que le musée d'Unterlinden à Colmar et quelques institutions des États-Unis d'Amérique qui détiennent une part de cette histoire étonnante des 14 oeuvres d'art peintes, à New York, par le Maître de l'Abstraction Lyrique.

An intangible and spiritual underground link existed, globally, between a few collectors, some galleries, a museum in France and four American institutions.
Because these four institutions held four very special paintings:
- The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo NY (FIRST AVENUE. 1957)
- The Art Institute of Chicago IL (FOURTH AVENUE. 1957)
- The Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburg PA (PAINTING. 1957)
- The Chase Manhattan Bank, New York NY (PARK AVENUE.1957)
which form part of a set of 14 works painted by Mathieu, underground, in three hours on Wednesday 9 October 1957, in the basement of the former Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York. This astonishing story began on 29 August 1957, when Georges Mathieu arrived in Japan and was met at Tokyo airport by members of the Gutaï group.
In three days, before an astonished and delighted audience, he produced 21 canvases and a 15m long fresco on Imperial Japan for his exhibition at the Shirokiya gallery. On 11 September, he was in Osaka, where he painted six more canvases, in public, for his exhibition at the Daïmaru gallery.
In the foreword to the catalogue for the first exhibition of Nevelson's work in Europe, at the Daniel Cordier gallery in Paris in 1960, Georges Mathieu recalled very different adventures in Japan and the United States:
I returned from Japan. I had painted in garages, in schools, in the street and I had felt the heat of the fascinated crowds. At my exhibition, I then saw 30,000 simple souls pass through over four days and I was moved by a real desire for communion. In Osaka, I had painted on the roof of a building beneath a sky criss-crossed by helicopters, I had to speak in front of 3000 students, anxious about their future now bound up with the problems of the West. And we know the artist's secret: Few have understood that for me painting in public represents the real communion with mankind.
Already, following the Véhémences confrontées exhibition at the Nina Dausset gallery in Paris in 1951 - the first meeting between the European and American avant-garde - Georges Mathieu had written a lively "Declaration to the American avant-garde painters" (1952) in which he stated: For the first time in the history of American painting, you 25 [Pollock, de Kooning, Reinhardt, Rothko, Still, etc.] can claim to have contributed to the construction of a tradition. American painting begins with you. You are among those who are today launching the adventure of painting around the world.
Mathieu's objective in 1957 was to affirm his painting and promote his art. In so doing, it was vital for him to assert his raison d'être to propose, impose and install his Lyrical Abstraction - of which he would make himself the advocate and remained the pioneer - founded on notions of speed, risk, concentration in a word, spontaneity.
The day after James Dean died somewhere on a country road, the artist arrived in New York on 1 October for the opening of his exhibition, "Lyrical Abstraction in new paintings by Mathieu" at the Kootz Gallery. He was 36 years old.
Georges Mathieu takes up his story as follows:
I arrived in New York. I attended a reception held in my honour: 200 people standing and, what's more, eating while standing. I managed to sit down. Ten days later, my dealer asked me to do some paintings for him. The only place he could find as a studio was the fourth basement level below the former Ritz-Carlton Hotel at 400 Madison Avenue. I went down alone, 45 feet underground, carrying my colours, alone, in elevators you operated alone, to discover at the end of long prison corridors, an immense room where I painted, alone, 14 paintings in three hours: the most Kafkaesque experience of my life - Kafkaesque not because of my solitude, but because of its causes.
The dealer Samuel Kootz had warned Mathieu that if the New York public learned that he had spent so little time producing a canvas, he could never ask the price he was hoping for.
One of the 14 works painted in three hours is entitled FOURTH AVENUE.
The canvas is square, the background painted red, on which the painter has centered his composition, constructed using a brush, in blue. And, using tubes directly on the canvas, the calligraphy appears firstly in white then blue. Sinusoids immerge from the writing like lines on a seismograph recording an earthquake. Finally, three blue strokes with the brush, from top to bottom, partially cover the symbols and other marks here and there, due to the speed of execution.
Each of my paintings is comparable to a jazz tune; the shapes are the expression of a very fast internal rhythm; all my movements follow on from one another and I can't explain or moderate them. Their result is a sort of inspired writing, produced without any premeditation.
Concerning the marks in his paintings, Mathieu declared: When you have a mutilated sculpture, the imagination replaces the missing part easily and better. The symbols partially concealed by marks acquire a new grandeur.
Having returned to Paris, Georges Mathieu received a letter from Kootz: "I have found such an interest in the paintings you produced here in New York that I am doing something quite exceptional and cancelling the last week of the exhibition of the current group and for five days - from 5 to 9 November - we will be hanging the works you produced while you were here."
A few photographs exist of Mathieu in the basement of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, published, without any specific caption, in the last two books the artist devoted to his work. In one of the pictures, we see the painter - after the act of painting, in a business suit - posing among the 14 paintings, some arranged vertically, other fat on the ground. FOURTH AVENUE. 1957 is on the ground, in the background to the left, probably because it is one of those loaded with the most paint.
This might be the right opportunity to reveal an anecdote. One day, I asked Georges Mathieu who took the photos in the New York basement, when he wrote that he went down alone?
He replied: It was my wife!
In fact, in 1959-1960 Adélaïde de Boisserée (1930-2004) produced several portraits of Georges Mathieu, published without a caption in the catalogues of his private exhibitions abroad - despite the fact that the prints sent to the press were stamped on the back "Photo Boisserée - mandatory credit".
The new owner of this work will therefore be able to share, with a select few, the intangible and spiritual underground link which will place this collector on the same level as the Musée d'Unterlinden in Colmar and a handful of institutions in the United States which own part of this astonishing story of the 14 works of art painted in New York by the Master of Lyrical Abstraction.

Having returned to Paris, Georges Mathieu received a letter from Kootz: "I have found such an interest in the paintings you produced here in New York that I am doing something quite exceptional and cancelling the last week of the exhibition of the current group and for five days - from 5 to 9 November - we will be hanging the works you produced while you were here."
A few photographs exist of Mathieu in the basement of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, published, without any specific caption, in the last two books the artist devoted to his work. In one of the pictures, we see the painter - after the act of painting, in a business suit - posing among the 14 paintings, some arranged vertically, other fat on the ground. FOURTH AVENUE. 1957 is on the ground, in the background to the left, probably because it is one of those loaded with the most paint.
This might be the right opportunity to reveal an anecdote. One day, I asked Georges Mathieu who took the photos in the New York basement, when he wrote that he went down alone?
He replied: It was my wife!
In fact, in 1959-1960 Adélaïde de Boisserée (1930-2004) produced several portraits of Georges Mathieu, published without a caption in the catalogues of his private exhibitions abroad - despite the fact that the prints sent to the press were stamped on the back "Photo Boisserée - mandatory credit".
The new owner of this work will therefore be able to share, with a select few, the intangible and spiritual underground link which will place this collector on the same level as the Musée d'Unterlinden in Colmar and a handful of institutions in the United States which own part of this astonishing story of the 14 works of art painted in New York by the Master of Lyrical Abstraction.
