'CONSOLE À L'OISEAU', A PATINATED BRONZE AND GLASS CONSOLE TABLE BY DIEGO GIACOMETTI, UNIQUE PIECE, CIRCA 1970
The industrialist and collector, Gustav Zumsteg (1915-2005), was a leading figure on the Swiss cultural scene. Zumsteg's career began in 1931 in the Abraham textile design company, where he undertook collections for Balenciaga, Hubert de Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent. Following his step father's death in 1957, he took responsibility for the legendary family restaurant Kronenhalle in Zurich, which became, as a result of his art acquisitions, a veritable private museum. It was at this time that Gustav Zumsteg became close to Aimé and Marguerite Maeght who introduced him to their prestigious circle of artist and collector friends, including Alberto and Diego Giacometti. Charmed by the furniture which Diego Giacometti designed for the couples eponymous foundation as well as for their private residence in Saint Paul de Vence, Zumsteg commissioned a series of decorative elements for the Kronenhalle. The consol presented here is a special commission from his private collection. In 1985, Gustav Zemsteg founded the Hulda and Gustav Zumsteg Foundation. He was also a patron of Zurich's Kunsthaus as well as a founding member of the Alberto Giacometti Foundation. 67 works from his private collection were sold at Christie's to beneft his foundation in 2006.
