Une attestation d'inclusion au nouveau catalogue critique de l'oeuvre complet de Paul Gauguin,actuellement en preparation par l'Institut Wildenstein, sera remise à l'acquéreur.
L'identité artistique forgée par Paul Gauguin tout au long de sa carrière repose toute entière sur la notion de sauvage. Se définissant comme tel, il s'arroge en tant qu'artiste une originalité qu'il juge incomparable. Bien que largement discrédité par la critique, il tire une profonde fierté de ce statut. Comme il l'écrit: "Je suis un sauvage et les civilisés le pressentent car dans mes oeuvres, il n'y a rien qui surprenne, qui déroute, si ce n'est ce 'malgré-moi de sauvage', c'est pourquoi c'est inimitable" (cité in Lettres à sa femme et à ses amis, Paris, 1946, pp. 326-327).
C'est en Bretagne, dès son premier séjour en 1886, que Gauguin initie l'esthétique qui lui est propre et qu'il développera par la suite en Océanie. Il explique ainsi à son confrère Émile Schuffenecker dans une lettre rédigée en février 1888 à Pont-Aven: "J'aime la Bretagne: j'y trouve le sauvage, le primitif. Quand mes sabots résonnent sur le sol de granit, j'entends le son sourd, mat et puissant que je cherche en peinture" (cité in Oviri, Ecrits d'un sauvage, Paris, 1974, p. 352). Mais c'est en 1889 à l'occasion de l'exposition universelle, dans les salles consacrées à l'ethnographie, que l'artiste est confronté pour la première fois aux images d'indigènes des colonies françaises d'Afrique et du Pacifique, qui changeront à jamais sa perception et sa conception du beau.
Fort de cette expérience saisissante et bien décidé à "être débarrassé de l'influence de la civilisation", il s'embarque bientôt pour Tahiti, pour un premier séjour de deux ans au cours duquel son style se radicalise. Immédiatement déçu par l'occidentalisation de Papeete, dont la poésie a déjà été selon lui balayée par les colons, il s'installe dans le village préservé de Mataiea. Si ses premiers tableaux traitent des instants de la vie quotidienne, il renoue bientôt avec le thème religieux. Ne parvenant tout d'abord pas à ses défaire totalement de son approche occidentale, il mêle aux représentations exotiques des symboles chrétiens, donnant naissance à des anges aux ailes jaunes et des vierges Marie vêtues de sarong (fig . 1). Mais il s'imprègne rapidement de l'atmosphère spirituelle locale, et réinvente sur la toile un monde primitif idéal, quasiment disparu. Bientôt, cet univers mythique se développe par la sculpture, avec plus de puissance encore que par la peinture. Dans des bois exotiques sculptés, gravés, parfois peints, l'artiste forge des idoles dans un pays où elles ont été détruites par les missionnaires chrétiens. Ces bois témoignent, au même titre que les toiles de cette période, d'une créativité extraordinaire et
absolument unique. Celle-ci trouvera l'une de ses expressions les plus puissantes dans les panneaux que l'artiste exécute pour orner sa dernière demeure aux Iles Marquises, la Maison du Jouir, où il s'installe en 1901 en quête d'une solitude qu'il espère propice à l'expression libre de son imagination et de son talent. Les panneaux sculptés à la taille directe, dans du bois de séquoia, aujourd'hui conservés pour la plupart au Musée d'Orsay à Paris, sont l'incarnation de l'âge d'or que l'artiste cherche à recréer.
Comme le souligne Christophe Gray à propos de la période tahitienne: "Gauguin produit soixante-six peintures et un nombre considérable de sculptures. Seule une infime part de cette production est aujourd'hui connue" (Sculptures et céramiques de Paul Gauguin, New York, 1980, p. 53). Conservé depuis plus de soixante-dix ans au sein d'une collection particulière, le présent bas-relief polychrome constitue donc à cet égard une formidable redécouverte. Bien qu'il soit impossible de dater précisément cette oeuvre, il existe indiscutablement de grandes similitudes avec le panneau Soyez mystérieuses (fig. 2), orné de bustes féminins sculptés en entailles rugueuses et incisives, exécuté à la veille de son départ pour Tahiti. Le nez très allongé, l'oeil mi-clos en amande et la boucle de cheveux roux sont autant d'éléments caractéristiques de la figure de profil située en haut à droite, et présents dans notre bas-relief. Le renard, en bas à droite d'un autre panneau sculpté à la même époque, Soyez amoureuses et vous serez heureuses, conservé au Boston Museum of Fine Art, est un autre élément nous autorisant à rapprocher le présent bois de la première période tahitienne. Les épaules de la jeune femme y sont en effet surmontées d'un motif rappelant l'animal, symbole cher à l'artiste réapparaissant régulièrement dans son oeuvre. He quickly immersed himself into local spiritual beliefs and in turn his canvasses became depictions of an idealized primitive utopia, all but extinct. Soon this mythical univers was transferred to sculpture, where he achieved even more powerful results than in his painting. Via his sculptures in exotic wood, carved and sometimes painted, the artist created new idols in a country where these had been destroyed by Christian missionaries. These wood carvings bear witness, as do his paintings of the period, to a extraordinary and absolutely unique creative mind. This would find one of its ultimate expressions in the panels the artist created as decoration for his last home on the Marquesa Islands, La Maison du Jouir, where he would live from 1901 in search of a solitude which he hoped would encourage the freedom of expression and imagination to satisfy his talent. The panels, sculpted free hand in sequoia wood and today in their majority conserved as part of the collection at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, are the embodiment of the golden age which the artist sought to recreate.
As Christophe Gray notes in relation to the Tahitian period: "Gauguin produced sixty six paintings and a considerable number of sculptures. Only a small fraction of this production is still known today" (Sculptures et céramiques de Paul Gauguin, New York, 1980, p. 53). Kept for more than seventy years within a private collection, the present low relief polychrome sculpture is, in light of this, a significant rediscovery. Impossible as it might be to precisely date this work, certain clear similarities do exist with the panel Soyez mystérieuses which is decorated with female busts carved with rough and incisive strokes, and was executed right before he left for Papeete. The greatly elongated nose, the half-closed almond-shaped eye and the lock of auburn hair are characteristics seen in the figure shown in profile at the upper right and shared by the figure in our low relief. The fox, located at the lower right of another panel from the same period entitled Soyez amoureuses et vous serez heureuses in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Art, is a further element which allows us relate the present work to Gauguin's first trip to Tahiti. Appearing above the shoulders of the young woman appears to be a form which recalls the fox, an important symbol to the artist and one which appeared often in his work. Referring to it as "an Indian symbol of perversity" in a letter written to Emile Bernard in 1889, the fox exists for Gauguin as a metaphor for sexuality in a number of important works, such as Les deux femmes and La perte du pucelage (fig. 3). In the present sculpture, it may be seen as the characteristic signature of the artist, as with his use of the dog in numerous other works of the period.
