Adriaen van Nieulandt was the brother of Willem van Nieulandt the Younger (1584-1635). Although little is known of Adriaen's career, Willem was Rome in the years around 1602, living with his uncle (also an artist named Willem), and it is possible that Adriaen was also there at the same date. The present drawing is very close in style to the formerly in a Dutch private collection, illustrated by Bernt (W. Bernt, , Munich, 1958, II, no. 443).
