Blubber Island, also known to locals as Blubber Butt, is a small body of land located off the coast of Port Clyde, Maine, where N.C. Wyeth's home, Eight Bells, and studio were located. Wyeth painted several views of the island, including (1938, National Academy Museum, New York) and (1944, Brandywine River Museum, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania). The present work, painted 1922-1930 is the artist's earliest depiction of the island.
