在一系列實驗之中，最重要的，無疑是語言與文字。在中國這有千年的文藝傳統的文化體糸之中，這點一直是極為沈重的環節。徐冰的《天書》(Lot 1468 ) 即是這方面的代表之作，是次的作品是徐氏前所未有對中文解構的一部份的冊頁裝釘文本。透過解構中文字的部份，徐氏造了近三千個以中文部首構成的、沒有意思的中文字。徐氏以這三千個字組成沒有意思的掛軸、經文、冊子、講義。這些扮成各式史書、經書及一般書籍的作品最先在一九八八年的北京展出。在當時展覽莊嚴的環境下，馬上吸引了輿論及觀眾的注視，並引起了不少的緊張。未能放棄文字作為載體的權威性的觀眾，努力想要找出作品中一句、甚至一個有意義的字。谷文達的《#B26 虛構文字系列》(Lot 1462 ) 掛軸，與《天書》有異曲同工之妙。谷氏的作品運用了古印及卷軸，諷刺了被其神話化的古文化傳統。古老的篆書是如此的陌生，對觀眾來說，那些真的篆書亦如新造的字一樣。
