Von der Femme joyeuse - einem Titel, der von Ferdinand Hodler selbst stammt - sind uns fünf verschiedene Versionen in Öl bekannt. Bei unserem Gemälde handelt es sich um eine Version von 1909, die eine kunsthistorisch äusserst interessante Provenienz aufweist. Die Femme joyeuse war nicht nur in zahlreichen namhaften Ausstellungen zu sehen, sondern war bis 1938 in der Sammlung von Margrit Kottmann-Müller, der Schwester Josef Müllers. Margrit Kottmann-Müller hatte das Gemälde kurz nach Vollendung direkt beim Künstler angekauft. Es war ihre Kunstsammlung, in die im Jahr 1929 auch Hodlers Eiger, Mönch und Jungfrau von Beatenberg aus (Los 87) Eingang fand. 1938 wechselten sowohl das Gemälde Femme joyeuse als auch das Bild Eiger, Mönch und Jungfrau von Beatenberg aus den Besitzer und verblieben seither in der gleichen Familie, eine bedeutende Schweizer Privatsammlung.
Eine weitere Fassung der Femme joyeuse ist noch im gleichen Jahr, 1909, entstanden. Diese war ursprünglich in der Sammlung des Winterthurer Textilindustriellen Richard Bühler sowie anschliessend im Besitz des Basler Chemikers Arthur Stoll. Die drei anderen Varianten können ins Jahr 1911 datiert werden, wovon eine bereits im Dezember 2000 bei Christie's für über zwei Millionen Schweizer Franken in eine bedeutende Schweizer Privatsammlung verkauft worden ist.
Als Modell für die Femme joyeuse diente Valentine Godé-Darel (Paris 1873-Vevey 1915). Valentine war Ferdinand Hodlers 'erregendste Leidenschaft' (Jura Brüschweiler) und Mutter ihrer gemeinsamen Tochter Paulette. Sie wuchs in Paris auf, wo sie eine künstlerische Ausbildung erhielt. Nach ihrer Scheidung zog sie im Jahr 1907 mit ihrer Mutter nach Genf und lernte nur wenige Monate später Ferdinand Hodler kennen. Zwischen 1908 und 1915 schuf Hodler über fünfzig Ölgemälde und zweihundert Skizzen, die Valentine zum Thema haben (siehe Los 67).
Das Gemälde ist im Schweizerischen Institut für Kunstwissenschaft, Zürich, unter der Nr. 31'582 als eigenhändige Arbeit von Ferdinand Hodler registriert und wird in den Oeuvrekatalog aufgenommen.
Of the Femme joyeuse - a title which comes from Ferdinand Hodler himself - we know of five different versions in oil. Our painting is a version from 1909, which possesses an extremely interesting art-historical provenance. The Femme joyeuse has been displayed in numerous well-known exhibitions, and was until 1938 in the collection of Margrit Kottmann-Müller, the sister of Josef Müller. Margrit Kottmann-Müller had purchased the painting shortly after completion directly from the artist. In 1929, Hodler's Eiger, Mönch und Jungfrau von Beatenberg aus (lot 87) was added to her art collection. In 1938 both the Femme joyeuse and the Eiger, Mönch und Jungfrau von Beatenberg aus changed owners and have remained since then in the same family, part of an important Swiss private collection.

This was originally in the collection of the Winterthur textile manufacturer Richard Bühler and then in the possession of the Basel chemist Arthur Stoll. The three other variants can be dated to the year 1911, one of which was sold in December 2000 with Christie's for over two million Swiss francs into a prominent Swiss private collection.

After her divorce in 1907, she moved with her mother to Geneva and became acquainted with Ferdinand Hodler after living there only a few months. Between 1908 and 1915 Hodler created over fifty oil paintings and two hundred sketches with Valentine as the subject.
The painting is registered as no. 31'582 with the Swiss Institute for Art Research, Zurich, as a genuine work by Ferdinand Hodler and will be included in the catalogue raisonné.
