Jean Arp réalise ses premiers "reliefs" entre 1914 et 1918, époque à laquelle il fréquente le groupe Dada à Zurich, tout en refusant toutefois de voir son travail lié à ce mouvement artistique. En effet, la source même des oeuvres uniques et très personnelles de Jean Arp se lit dans une approche très élémentaire de la nature, inclassable tant dans le mouvement surréaliste que dans le néo-plasticisme, qui faisait dire à Alfred Barr que l'artiste était "à lui seul un laboratoire de la découverte d'une forme nouvelle".
C'est dans les années 1920 que Jean Arp invente son "encyclopédie arpadienne". Ce véritable langage artistique est le témoin fort de l'indépendance de l'artiste dont le travail de l'époque est imprégné des recherches esthétiques sur les formes pouvant évoquer les mystères et la poésie de la vie. Aux marges de l'abstraction, Horloge est une oeuvre profondément enracinée dans l'imaginaire poétique de l'artiste. L'aiguille de l'horloge semble tourner lentement sur le cadrant, évoquant le cours de la vie qui engendre la nature symbolisée par deux formes d'oiseau. Superposant plusieurs images poétiques dans un même "relief", Arp ne s'abandonne pourtant pas à copier la nature mais lui rend hommage dans une évocation subtile de ses formes.
Une autre version de cette oeuvre, numérotée 2/2 et conçue dans les années 1960, se trouve au Musée d'Art de Münster en Allemagne.

The very source of Jean Arp's unique and very personal works can be seen by his very rudimentary approach to nature, which cannot be classified as part of the surrealist movement or the neo-plasticism movement and prompted Alfred Barr to state that the artist was "a one-man laboratory for the discovery of new form".

This genuine artistic language is a major testament to the artist's independence, whose work at the time was immersed in aesthetic research with regard to the forms which could evoke the mysteries and poetry of life. On the fringes of abstraction, Horloge is a work deeply rooted in the artist's poetic imagination. The hands of the clock seem to turn slowly on the dial, evoking the progression of life, which creates nature symbolised by two forms of birds. By superimposing several poetic images in the same relief, Arp does not however indulge in copying nature but pays tribute to it by subtlety evoking its forms.
