8o (225 x 143mm). 24pp., (Soft vertical crease). Original peach-colored paper wrappers, gilt-lettered title and woodcut scene of miners at work. (Extremely minor rubbing to spine). Otherwise in very fine condition. Folding protective box. With a lithographic cover letter, dated January 1879, urging the recipient to carefully study the enclosed prospectus.

"This portion of our Western Empire, but three short years ago, a wilderness inhabited by the most savage tribes...to-day presents to the observer all the tokens of a healthy and vigorous civilization..." Once opened, "the country investigated at the end of a pick disclosed the existence in inexhaustible quantities of quartz carrying pay!" And after glowing reports on the investors flocking to share in this bonanza, the author proclaims that "the sacrifices made by the Pioneers who fought Indians and dodged government troops, were not made in vain; their heroism and perseverance has opened to this nation and to the world a TREASURE HOUSE OF PRECIOUS MINERALS that has no equal on earth."

Eberstadt 163:204 ("We do not recall having seen another copy of this extremely early description of the Black Hills mining region"); Streeter Sale 2069 (lacking wrappers).
