Miallet Collection; Drouot, Paris, 9-10 June 1902, lot 35, as one of two pendants, 'Dans l'un, une mare et un arbre ébraché devant l'escalier d'un palais á colonnade animé de différents personnages; plus loin, un temple et un obélisque. Vers le fond, des peupliers. Dans l'autre, un troupeau de boeufs et de moutons passant sous un arc de triomphe et des bergers au repos. The present lot was once part of a series of at least four oval landscapes from 1778 by Hubert Robert that had been separated, were then briefly reunited in the collection of the couturier Jacques Doucet, then once again separated in subsequent sales. The present lot, known as , was paired in the Miallet collection with , a painting signed and dated , when they were purchased by Doucet, who reunited them with two other ovals from the series. After they were sold in the Doucet sale of 1912, was paired with and the two works were sold several times, eventually having been acquired by another celebrated couturier, Karl Lagerfeld. The present lot has been sold individually, and the fourth painting, , is now unlocated.

The present painting is datable to 1778 and will be included in the forthcoming of the paintings of Hubert Robert being prepared at the Wildenstein Institute.
