Cette oeuvre sera incluse dans la nouvelle édition du catalogue raisonné d'Alfred Sisley de François Daulte actuellement en préparation à la Galerie Brame & Lorenceau par le Comité Alfred Sisley.
L'impressionnisme naturaliste d'Alfred Sisley doit beaucoup aux paysages de la Seine-et-Marne. Installé à Moret-sur-Loing en 1884, le peintre s'illustra dans la représentation de cette campagne tranquille en lisière de la forêt de Fontainebleau. A l'égal de son ami Claude Monet qui travaillait en série, Sisley réalisa en 1888 une déclinaison de toiles ayant pour thème le pont de pierre rustique de cette petite commune. L'ouvrage d'architecture ancien - datant du XIIe siècle et élargi au cours du XIXe siècle - enjambe le Loing, confluent de la Seine. Les arc - boutants de la cathédrale, si souvent présente dans d'autres compositions de Sisley, se devinent derrière le pont et les pierres de la ville. Le peintre donne une place centrale à l'eau mouvante de la rivière, dissimulée derrière un ensemble de quatre peupliers verdoyants. Les teintes sont printanières, et le vert se décline ici dans un camaïeu délicat et soutenu qui offre une belle harmonie avec le bleu du ciel, sa couleur complémentaire dans la nature.
Avec une finesse qui le distingue parmi ses contemporains impressionnistes, Sisley joue habilement sur les différents plans de la composition. La rangée d'arbres du premier plan agit comme un rideau de scène mettant en valeur les motifs architecturaux au fond de la toile. La présence du pont est ainsi renforcée par l'encadrement latéral des peupliers. Ce jeu de cadrages et d'échos entre les deux rives sert d'écrin subtil aux effets de miroitement de la clarté des nuages et des habitations dans l'eau de la rivière. Compatriote de Bonington et de Turner, le peintre s'est toujours montré à leur instar particulièrement sensible à l'influence des saisons sur la campagne et la retranscription des ciels. Alfred Sisley avait une prédilection particulière pour le "ciel bleu et ses beaux nuages baladeurs" de sa région d'adoption (A. Sisley cité in F. Daulte, Sisley, Les Saisons, Paris, 1992, p. 70). Oeuvre de maturité, ce paysage de Moret-sur-Loing témoigne de la fraîcheur toujours renouvelée de son talent. Cette toile s'inscrit dans les années de la reconnaissance du talent de Sisley sur la scène internationale. Entré dans les collections nationales françaises, bénéficiant d'expositions personnelles depuis 1883, l'artiste était par ailleurs représenté par le marchand Paul Durant-Ruel dans sa nouvelle galerie ouverte à New York en 1888. Ce succès ne le détourna jamais d'une vie simple et entièrement dédiée à la peinture impressionniste de plein-air, qu'il mena à Moret-sur-Loing jusqu'en 1899, date de sa disparition à l'âge de soixante ans.
The naturalist Impressionism of Alfred Sisley owes much to the landscapes of the Seine-et-Marne. Having moved to Moret-sur-Loing in 1884, the painter expressed himself through the representation of this peaceful countryside located on the edge of the forest of Fontainebleau. Like his friend Claude Monet who also painted in series, in 1888 Sisley produced a variety of canvases based around the theme of this little town's rustic stone bridge. This ancient architectural feat - dating from the XIIth century and enlarged during the XIXth - spans the Loing, a tributary of the Seine. The buttresses of the cathedral, which are so often present in other compositions by Sisley, can be made out behind the bridge and the stonework of the town. The painter gives pride of place to the flowing water of the river, which lies behind a group of four lush green poplars. The colours are reminiscent of spring, and the colour green is used here in a delicate and deep monochrome which provides a beautiful harmony with the blue of the sky, its naturally complimentary colour.
With a finesse which distinguishes him among his Impressionist contemporaries, Sisley skilfully plays on the composition's various depths. The row of trees in the foreground acts like a stage curtain, highlighting the architectural patterns in the background of the canvas. The presence of the bridge is reinforced by the poplars which frame it on each side. This interplay of framing and echoes between the two banks serves as a subtle showcase for the mirroring effects of the brightness of the clouds and the homes in the surface of the river. Sisley quite naturally makes it an element of life, on the same level as the water and the murmuring of the poplars in the wind, evoked by the use of a naive and rapid stroke in the treatment of the leaves. As an Impressionist painter, the artist here expresses the airy and atmospheric rendering of the countryside with his customary talent.
Sisley combines a modern Impressionist approach to the depictions of countryside with lessons from the greatest landscape masters of his native land, England. A compatriot of Bonington and Turner, the painter, like them, was particularly sensitive to the influence of the seasons on the countryside and the appearance of the sky. Sisley had a particular predilection for the "blue sky and the beautiful wandering clouds" of his adoptive region (A. Sisley quoted in F. Daulte, Sisley, Les Saisons, Paris, 1992, p. 70). A mature work, this landscape of Moret-sur-Loing testifies to the constantly renewed freshness of his talent. This canvas dates from the time when Sisley's talent was just beginning to be recognized on the international scene. With works in the French national collections, and benefiting from personal exhibitions from 1883, the artist was also represented by the great dealer Paul Durand-Ruel in the new gallery he opened in New York in 1888. This success never distracted him from a simple life dedicated entirely to outdoor Impressionist painting, which he spent in Moret-sur-Loing throughout the remainder of his life.
