A GEORGE III MAHOGANY BREAKFRONT BOOKCASE

The scrolled open pediment with imbricated underside and dentilled cornice centred by a platform, above a pair of doors with geometric astragals and husk-carved central parting, flanked by tapering pilasters carved with fruit and foliage surmounted by a volute carved with acanthus issuing a flowered swag and ending in a flowered patera, enclosing four adjustable oak shelves, three with mahogany mouldings and one lacking its mahogany moulding, the conforming wings with three adjustable oak shelves on one side and four adjustable oak shelves on the other, each shelf with a mahogany moulding, the base with a moulded shelf above a pair of central panelled doors with egg-and-dart border with interlaced foliate scrolls in each corner, the central doors and lower left door lacking shelves, the lower right side door enclosing an adjustable pine shelf with mahogany moulding, on a moulded plinth, losses and replacements to dentils, the two lowest husks on the upper door parting replaced, losses to some flowers on the pilasters flanking the doors, replacements to carved foliage on the lower doors, two bevelled glass panes reused, the backboard and interior of the base with two cuts for wires and painted in a red wash
