The rectangular crossbanded quarter-veneered top inlaid with boxwood with an oval panel centred by a sun motif, above a mahogany slide lined with original gilt-tooled green leather, with a mahogany-lined side drawer with pen tray and two ink wells, with chamfered rails, on square tapering simulated-fluted legs headed by paterae, on block feet with original brass caps and castors, previously with a galleried undertier, the handles largely original

Probably supplied by Thomas Chippendale circa 1770 to Sir Penistone Lamb, 1st Viscount Melbourne (1748-1819) for Melbourne House, Piccadilly, London and later moved to Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire and by descent through
Admiral of the Fleet Lord Walter Talbot Kerr, G.C.B., Brocket Hall, to the present owner.
