THREE FULL LENGTH COURT PAINTINGS OF SONS OF FATH 'ALI SHAH QAJAR The following three oil paintings appear to come from a series made for an unknown palace. The subjects are 'Abbas Mirza (1789-1833), Hasan 'Ali Mirza (1789-1852) and Shaykh 'Ali Mirza (1795-1846/7). Judging from the appearance of the two senior brothers who appear to be about 25 years of age, the paintings date from around 1810-1815. The three paintings are linked by the painted wooden panel which runs behind them, as well as by pose and size. The painting of 'Abbas Mirza is slightly larger than that of his brothers, as befits his relative importance. It is also of significantly finer quality than the other two, both in the observation of the detail of the jewellery and textiles and in the rendering of the face. The quality of this piece enables an attribution to be made to the court painter Mihr 'Ali (see below). It seems likely that the other two brothers were painted in the same studio by pupils or followers of the great artist and probably under his supervision. The paintings of the two brothers both bear an elegant and poetic inscription in cartouches along the lower edge. Paintings such as these were made for the many palaces of Fath 'Ali Shah and his sons. Given the importance of the portrait of 'Abbas Mirza, they may well have been made for one of his residences. Paintings such as this would have been pasted to the niches of interior walls, hence the arched shape. After the demise of Fath 'Ali Shah his successor Muhammad Shah appears to have been indifferent to his grandfather's artistic legacy and many of the palaces fell into disrepair or were later torn down by Nasir al-Din Shah. When I.N.Berezin, the Russian orientalist visited Iran in 1842, he saw paintings still on the walls of ruined palaces built for Fath 'Ali Shah and his sons. Almost all Qajar paintings have repairs to the edges, where they were torn down from the walls, and this is the case in these three examples.(Adamova, A.T.: Art and diplomacy, Qajar paintings in the State Hermitage Museum, in Diba, L. ed.: Royal Persian Paintings, The Qajar Epoch, 1785-1925, New York, 1999, pp. 67,69)
